Just returned from a third year at Gunwhark Quays Holiday Inn Express. I'm going next year as well, nice staff, nice hotel, good situation.

Staying on 2nd floor and lift out of service for duration of stay which made the stay pretty exhausting.
Rooms now looking quite tired (stains on carpets etc.)
Room cost very expensive compared to other HI Expresses

Whilst the room was well prepared and comfortable for the price paid the breakfast should have been a reflection of that. IT WAS NOT!
Tables had not been cleared or wiped down, fruit juices were watery and far too sweet, the cooked breakfast was sausages (okay but a little undercooked) and scrambled egg (a solid lump of dry over-cooked eggs).
We did not even stay for a cup of coffee but left the hotel quickly.

This is the third time we have stayed at Holiday Inn Express in Portsmouth and we have never been let down in any way. The Staff are always polite and the rooms (bedroom and general) are always clean and the bedrooms are well equipped. The pillows are your choice and this I like as I have to have a firm pillow. The mattress is the same and this I like for the same reason as the pillow. The bathroom towels are always spotless and the water hot - most important, and the bathroom is clean. Reception staff helpful and explain things clearly.

This not working was a problem to some as the reception in on the first floor.The staff did explain the reasons for the lift not in action in a calm and friendly way.

The Check-In desk to this Hotel is situated on the first floor and as the lifts do not work they may only be accessed via a spiral staircase.
We had checked in for the weekend and I was disappointed that there was no one available at the ground floor to help us with our luggage. The same problem once checked in, was getting all our luggage to the room. In checking out we had the same issue no one to help us with our luggage.
I think tgat this was an issue that the Hotel was aware of before we arrived and we should have had at least an email to warn us of this.
I was very disappointed with this lack of service.

It was a place to get a night's sleep. No more. Worn and dirty, blah breakfast, no lifts. Not up to the IHG brand standard.
