As always this Hotel is exceptional staff try very hard to please and location is excellent will visit time and time again.

Booked in Dec for a visit in January and got a great deal. We were celebrating a special birthday on board HMS Warrior and the location couldn't have been better; right on Gun Wharf Quay, so just minutes walk to all the attractions: shops, restaurants, historic dockyards etc. Room clean and comfortable. Staff really helpful and friendly. Only two negatives; we arrived lunchtime Saturday and because of the hotel's location you have no choice other than to queue in traffic which is waiting to get into the main shopper's carpark; rather frustrating when you can see the hotel, but can't get to it! The second slight negative for me was the fact that reception is on the first floor, reached by a lift, and then the rooms are on the two floors above, again accessed by a lift.....I hate lifts, finding them claustrophobic, but couldn't face tackling three flights of stairs with a suitcase. Despite that I would recommend the hotel. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast was self service, but great. We would definitely visit again, but next time try not to arrive at lunchtime on a Saturday!

We had originally booked to stay over in Portsmouth over two nights but booked a third night due to the wonderful welcome and hospitality we received from staff at the hotel. It was the perfect base for us as we were able to explore the quays on our very own doorstep. You have everything that you could possibly want at your finger tips. Shopping, eating out. and the history. At the end of the day it was so good just to walk a short distance back to our comfortable hotel. We will definately book to stay here again. A huge thank you to the staff who were so welcoming and friendly.

My partner, grandson and myself had a couple of days here, we actually came for the attractions on Portsmouth Harbour, which was a fantastic day out which we would recommend to anyone who is into their history, Nelson's ship was amazing! we had a brilliant guide who told us everything we needed to know.
Back to the hotel....... it was spotlessly clean, communal areas as well as the bedroom. Lovely bathroom too. Staff were very friendly and always keen to help with any questions. Breakfast was more than adequate, only one minor thing was that the hot selection was only just warm, but I suppose this will always be a problem when left in a warming tray. This didn't stop us having a good breakfast though, so don't be put off by this. We definately would recommend this hotel to anyone. Great value for money.

We stayed as a family of 3. Parking was in the normal Gunwharf shopping centre car park, so make sure you drop bags or luggage off 1st before entering the car park. Gunwharf can be busy and so you could find yourself parked quite a distance away. 1st 24 hours free then 2 pounds each 24 hours after which is brilliant. Rooms are fine and spacious, bathroom has showers only. Breakfast interesting no real full english here I am afraid all self service which is ok. Reception staff are really helpfull, eating to a number of restaurants is just a stones throw away, and some give upto 20% discount for staying at the hotel.

Sorry to leave such a bad review but the bed was uncomfortable, the sofa bed supplied for my daughter was only fit for the tip, it was old and well used and very uncomfortable - not fit for purpose. I mentioned this to the disinterested male receptionist when I checked out.
Breakfast was disappointing - I had a 'slice' of scrambled egg which was disgusting and must have been there ages in view of the consistancy.
The window was not left on a tight latch in the room and blew open in the night leaving the room cold and we were then able to hear all the noise outside.
Also, when I book and pay for a room I don't expect the greeting on the screen of my TV to be welcoming my husband!! Not me as the Mrs of the party. Either mention the whole family or just the person who pays and books - stop being sexist - we are now in 2013!
The location is very good and that is why we booked. Car parking was great value too at a rate of £2 flat rate for over 24 hours.
Sadly though the hotel was tired and not enough effort made with the beds and customer service.

We stayed for one night as a family. The room was spotless and the beds comfortable. All the staff we encounted were polite and helpful. The bonus with this hotel is its fab location. We parked in the car park and from there walked to the Historic Docks which are well worth a visit. From there we strolled back enjoying the shopping and restaurants at gunwharf Quay.
Great stay and good value for money. Thanks

Have stayed here a number of times to/from the ferry port. Always comfortable and good value for money. Just one suggestion..but this applies to all the Express H Inns..please change the scrambled eggs for breakfast!

uncomfortable bed , cold room, very difficult to find the hotel entrance in the dark and rainy night,
If you go on a bank holiday ( we did) be warned GET there early took us 45mins to get in the car park.everyone uses the same car park shoppers and guests for the hotel what a nightmare
breakfeast was ok but cold , staff were smart and polite.
Did worry that anyone from the street could come in and out as
reception did not always have someone on duty.

I've stayed in quite a few of Holiday In Expresses and this is by far the best.
From the Manager down, everybody is pleasant, helpful and friendly. The chamber maids were a delight, nothing was too much trouble. Even the maintenance man was prompt to act when needed, and cheerful in his disposition.
With all the shops and restaurants on the doorstep, if you need to stay in Portsmouth, this is the one I’d stay in.

The hotel was a great location to gain access to a great night out. The room was spacious and clean and noise free although being so close to the Gun Wharf Quay shops. The free parking was also a plus for the duration of my one night stay(just get the hotel to sort your card out).
Please note that if a vegetarian or similar the breakfast options are limited and you would need to notify the hotel before hand to get say veggie sausages etc. (I was informed by a staff member)
But generally a good experience.

This hotel is conveniently positioned adjacent to a new shopping and leisure development. There are plenty of places to eat within a few minutes walk. Also the city centre is within walking distance.
The hotel itself is modern (obviously) and the rooms are compact but comfortable with a good shower. However, in our room at least, the mattress was in dire need of replacement, offering little support and meaning we struglled to end up in a pile in the middle of the bed.
Breakfast was OK, with a decent choice and a good view over the quay.
We would stay here again if wanting to stay in this area.

We needed somewhere to stay in Portsmouth and the Holiday Inn Express is right in the midst of bars, shops and excitement. We did an advance booking and the room was excellent value so close to Christmas. The staff were very friendly and the rate even included breakfast. Recommended. Doing it again this summer!

When I go back home to the South I always stay at this hotel apart from convenient location the staff have always been very good and helpful. I made a request after my 1st visit and they fulfilled my request, I will always stay here when I go home.

Great location for the amenities nearby. Good service at check-in and staff very helpful in fixing any problems - I needed a small heater in the room during the cold spell in Portsmouth - it was provided right away. Room was basic, comfortable and quiet. My only complaint would be charging for internet use, at very high rates too. My response was to use my smart phone for some E-mails and general internet access in my room, and then to visit one of the nearby coffee shops which offer free internet, when I needed to connect my laptop.

This Express is my favourite due to location and staff. The staff try their very best to accomodate a reception level floor room for me as I do not use lifts. Check in is quick. Portsmouth has to be a break to interest every member of a family due to 95 outlet shops and History by the bucketful.

The room was clean and comfortable. The staff friendly. Location ideal. Not into sausages so there was no choice for breakfast. The selection of bread, cereals, fruit, croissants was good though. A choice of egg style would have been nice, only scrambled offered. Would I stay again? Yes.

Lovely freindly hotel right in amongst it. And in easy walking distance to the Guildhall. Very comfortable room and very clean, with a lovely bed! We will be using this hotel again in June 2013. We would recomend this hotel but would just like to mention parking is a nightmare if you do not arrive early.

I have stayed here a few times now, it's in a perfect situation, staff have always been helpful. If you travel a busy time the roads around gun wharf get snarled up near the car park. My one consistent complaint, is that I stay in many hotels around the country and this is without doubt the worst breakfast each time I stay. It is dire. However the location means I put up with it and eat elsewhere.

It's the second time we have had the pleasure of staying in the hotel, the room requested I had spoken to a member of staff about had been out into place and our room was comfy and a nice place to chill out after a hard days shopping.
Friendly staff, Shaun was on the front desk he was helpful as well as another young lady.
We had a nice breakfast each morning, the staff worked hard to clean tables and keep the Buffett well stocked.
We look forward to coming back in December 2013!

Hotel is smack bang in the middle of the outlet shops and restaurants. Parking is accessible but you need to get there early and park as it gets really busy.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable, some slight noise from outside.
Didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on choice,or quality.
