Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Unplanned Stay We needed a place to stay unexpectedly due to weather and wandered into the Holiday Inn Express in Rensselaer hoping for a room. Staff immediately welcomed us, got us set-up with overnite essentials and showed me to the washing machines. The storm was so bad the hotel lost electricity in the morning but staff warmly invited guests to the common area, made sure we had what we needed and kept the food coming! June 23, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Responsive staff, nice stay, will visit again Upon checkin, the staff was friendly and welcoming. I was issued my keys and wifi instructions, given breakfast and checkout times, and directed to the elevator - very efficient. I was a warm day, but the hotel was cool and comfortable. When I arrived at my room, I noticed it was a bit warm, and I proceeded to adjust the under-the-window air conditioning unit in Room 314. It was set on "cool" and "low fan" upon my arrival. I adjusted the settings to "coldest" and "hi fan". There was no thermostatic control on this unit. I then went out for a bite to eat. There are several chain fast-food eateries in the immediate vicinity. I then returned to the room and connected to the wifi (no problem there) and flipped on the TV to see what was on. They provide a convenient printed channel guide, which appeared to be up-to-date. There are no movie channels offered, but they did offer a variety of Chicago area channels, and I found some good programming on WTTW-11. After about 3 hours, I realized that the abnormally warm room was not getting any cooler. I monitored the AC unit and noted that the compressor did indeed come on and the unit discharged cool air, but not for long enough on each cycle. After only a few minutes, the compressor switched off, and then there were several more minutes before it switched back on. The duty cycle it was working at was not sufficient to cool my room to my liking, and it was beyond my control to do anything about it, so I called the lobby desk. The attendant came to my room and examined the settings I had set on the unit, noted that it was putting out cold air, which I confirmed and explained that it just didn't put out enough for long enough period. She asked if I would mind moving to a different room. I replied that I wouldn't mind, as long as the air worked, and she let me know she'd be right back with the keys. She returned a few minutes later with the keys to a room conveniently across the hall. This room had a newer AC unit with an actual thermostatic control and digital readout for the preset. I moved my limited amount of stuff into the room and soon was enjoying cool and comfortable temperatures! After a good night's sleep, I went downstairs for breakfast. Everything was ready and available that I expected to find. Offerings included dry cereal, milk, juices, bananas, hard boiled eggs, fresh turkey sausage, and already prepared omelets, bagels, English muffins, breads and muffins. There was also a pancake maker which I did not use. During my dining, I noticed that the attendant did clear a few tables after guests had left, and I was glad to see that the tables were being tended to. When I returned to my room, I discovered that my key did not open the latch on my door. The green light flashed as expected, but the latch did no release to open. I returned to the lobby desk, and the maintenance man was right there. The lobby attended verified that my keys were encoded and I returned to the room with the maintenance man. He was familiar with the syndrome I was seeing and promptly retrieved the master key (a mechanical key) that allowed him to turn the mechanism of the lock. After that, my room key then functioned. Checkout was trouble free and pleasant. June 20, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great service and staff My son got married in the general area of this Holiday Inn Express and the majority of the rooms were occupied by the wedding party and guests since everyone was from out-of-town. The rooms were comfortable and served every ones needs. The only thing I was missing was a small refrigerator in the room. I give all the staff the greatest rating ever. They were so tolerant and understanding when the hotel was filled with 100 or more 25 and plus year old wedding guests. They all remained so professional at all times, but were also understanding about missing keys. They must have had to issue replacement keys for 75% of the rooms and of course this crowd left a lot of trash. No bad comment was ever heard about trash, cigarette butts, or being too loud. I will stay at this Holiday Inn Express any time I get the chance. I recommend it to all! June 15, 2015

Heading north and exiting the freeway, it is impossible to see the hotel since there is no tall sign. Also, the road on which to turn for the hotel has no sign at all. It took me over 15 minutes to find a hotel right off the freeway. Once there, it is a good location and value. June 1, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Room felt damp and not clean and fresh; great staff Overall cleanliness of the facility seemed to be lacking and not up to the usual Holiday Inn Express standards. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room had a damp feel to it like maybe it had been sitting for a long time with no A/C or something? We got the air cranked and slept fine but were disappointed overall. I don't know if the other rooms had this problem or not, so not able to recommend the property at this time. June 1, 2015
