Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Musty smells a firm mattress = "motel" experience We stayed here during a month long business trip. It was our first stay at a Holiday Inn Express, as our usual hotel choices were booked full for the night. At first glance we were pleased. The room was large and bright and seemed clean, albeit a bit overly fragrant with room freshener smell. Things quickly deteriorated. The rug was "sticky" for lack of a better word. It felt gummy and the socks went right back on for the duration of the stay. Settling back on the (very firm) bed to relax and watch TV, a nasty, musty odor became apparent. I thought maybe a previous guest had dumped liquid on the rug or something and mold/mildew had resulted. The odor grew as the evening progressed. We left for dinner and returned to find the air freshener had worn off and the musty odor now prevailed. Too late and too tired to do much about it, we settled in for sleep. I will admit to enjoying soft, comfy mattresses as found in the other hotel chains and didn't sleep well on this firm mattress, but that's just my personal preference. We were also placed in the end room on the first floor and had people going in and out the side entrance all night. Walls were thin! Morning came and in the new light of day I discovered a nasty smear of ??? on the headboard of the other bed. The reek was tremendous and may have been the main issue with the room. Went to the front desk and was treated with irritation. No apology, just irritation. I was brusquely asked if I needed another room and opted at that point to just change hotels. The whole experience was akin to staying at a cheap motel chain. Really left me feeling like a shower was needed after the whole experience with the property and staff. Ick. June 16, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by What I've Come to Expect Everything was up to par with what I've come to expect at a HI Express except that the room had a slightly musty odor. Great bed, pillows, food and service. Lastly, fitness area was the same as every other hotel chain but PLEASE invest in a nice fitness room. Be better than everyone else on this because it matters.
