I enjoyed my stay but there needed to be more people on at the Front Desk when I checked in. The front desk person was on the phone, the other line was ringing, there was a customer trying to check in. I was lucky as a Priority Club member, she checked me in quickly. I always think that phones can wait when there is a person waiting to check in. Also, your breakfast buffet should include fresh fruit and yogurt as that is what most female business travelers eat for breakfast. The room was great and the bed was very comfortable!

After 3 days and 1,400 miles we arrived at the HIE in Salem, VA. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful setting in the mountains and the fresh, clean, orderly rooms and lobby. The staff was more than helpful, and did everything they could to make our stay an easy and comfortable one. The room itself was a King Leisure with a sofa, which includes a microwave and refrigerator and sofa. Everything was spotless, the sheets and bed were extremely comfortable, and the shower was clean and refreshing with a nice line of products. We had a great nights rest in this quiet hotel. Within walking distance is a Burger King, which allowed us to stretch our legs and grab a quick bite to eat. We had stayed in other HIE along the way and this one by far is the best we have ever stayed at. As Priority Club members, we enjoy the breakfasts and amenities. The breakfast room also had a huge picture window facing the mountains with a nice variety of tasty breakfast items. We did a load of wash and were able to purchase detergents at the front desk for a small charge. The washer and dryer were spotless and did a fine job. It bears repeating to mention that the staff at this hotel went the extra mile (no pun intended) to assure our stay was satisfactory to us. It was an excellent choice. Will return on other visits to this area without a doubt.

In the midst of a long hard day and being completely drenched in the pouring rain, I was directed to the Holiday Inn not the Holiday Inn Express a few more miles down the road. At the Holiday Inn of course they couldn't find my reservation because I was at the wrong hotel. While dripping water all over the place the desk clerk offered me a room there. She said she would call the Holiday Inn Express and make the cancelation. Well guess what? They refused to accept my cancelation.
So, back on the bike in the pouring rain and on the freeway to the Holiday Inn Express. Not only was this very uncomfortable, it was dangerous and I got splashed over and over and over again by cars and big rigs.
The desk clerk at the Holiday Inn Express barely said one word to me and I chose to keep my mouth shut as well. I understand that it's a hotel's right to refuse a cancelation, but to put customers in a dangerous situation is worse.
I will never stay at that particular hotel again nor will I recommend it to anyone. Holiday Inn & Holiday Inn Express have gone to the bottom of my list of places to stay.

This is a nice clean Holiday Inn Express.
I don't like the beds at HIE, if it's not a problem for you this hotel is a good choice.
No pool at this location...

I had not made a reservation to stay at Holiday Inn Express in Salem, Va. However, not wanting to drive any further, I stopped in & asked if there were any vacancies. The front desk girl was friendly & efficient. I would like to mention that there is not enough lighting around the sink-area in the bathroom. There was plenty of light in the shower, but needs more light in the bathroom.

1. Didn't like the in-room chair (no arms) and the desk chair was broken.
2. Hate the short (low) toilet.
3. Getting tired of same-old breakfast items at Holiday Inn.

Great hotel- new clean and convenient but the breakfast didn't not have any milk and was making NO alternatives like going over to the gas station and buying some for the guests which is what I did! There also was no half and half for coffee which they did not make any concessions for either. Disappointed in how a simple customer service issue could have been handled so differently.

My wife, daughter and I stayed a night here when coming in for my nieces graduation at Radford University. I booked late, so this was the closest I could get, but with the hotel being right off of I-81, Radford was a quick shoot down I-81 South (about 30 min). Did a late check-in and the night clerk was very pleasant and welcoming. What staff we saw were very friendly and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. We didn't get to experience breakfast because we just didn't have the time to stop since we had to get to Radford so early. However, the breakfast area looked clean and inviting and the people we did see eating seemed to be enjoying it. I would definitely stay here again!

We had an enjoyable stay at this Holiday Inn Express. The bed was comfortable, large private bath area, flat screen TV's, quiet area and room. The breakfast had lots to choose from and all the items were fresh and well prepared.
The only negative is that there are no restaurants nearby but about 5 miles down the road plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Stopped in Salem which is half way to my destination in NJ. Convenient location and good value for a comfortable clean room. We visit this location several times a year. Very reliable consistent good service .

This hotel was my layover between a trip to Baltimore MD and my home in SC. I arrived after midnight and was greeted warmly at the front desk and was given a nice little thank you bag. I was very tired and the room was such a pleasant surprise! Immaculate, well appointed! I so enjoyed the stay! This was so appreciated as the stay in Baltimore was not a Holiday Inn and I found the hotel extremely noisy, although the staff was very nice, the room was extremely dirty!

This is a somewhat smaller property located not far off Route 81 just south of Roanoke. It is nicer than many of the smaller hotels in the area and is well maintained.
And the prices aren't bad either! There isn't too much to say when folks get things right...

One should be able to make their room dark during the day or if you want to sleep in. There are only white sheer curtains that do little to block light and allow for little sleep.

Snow was falling when we arrived.Hot cup of coffee hit the spot.Very unusual decor and colors, but our granddaughters thought it was cool. Enjoyable stay,looking forward to same time next year.

We were traveling on our way from Nashville to Washington DC with our 9 yr old granddaughter and thought the Holiday Inn Express in Salem would be a good stopping point for the night. I looked at all the reviews of hotels in the area and chose this one based on what I read. There is nothing I hate worse that a bad hotel. This Holiday Inn was amazing! The décor was bright and beautiful and it was spotless! The first thing I saw when I opened the door to the room were the beds! They were made up in white sheets and were so soft! No ugly,nasty bedspreads or comforters! I slept so good. We awoke around 6:15 and hurried down to check out breakfast. Everything was out and ready. Hot biscuits, scrambled eggs, cinnamon rolls,etc. I have stayed in a lot of hotels,some that cost $300 to $500 per night and have never had one that topped this one. If I am ever in the area again I will be staying again. 5 stars and a big thumb

The location is great, easy access, very good staff. Wish it had an indoor pool for our granddaughter, but it is only a mile form son and family's home-so it is a perfect location for us! We have stayed here several times since our kids moved to Salem.
My only complaint is the decor, I think it is very unattractive. Lime green walls, unusual furniture and decorations--very gaudy and tacky. The decor does not match the beautiful mountains of Virginia and the historical significance of the area. The carpeting in the room(King suite) looked pretty worn and somewhat dirty. Otherwise the room and hotel were very clean and neat..

Stayed here just for a suite. Unfortunately, after we had gotten the kids tucked in bed, realized the bathroom had not been cleaned and had razor and hairy soap in bath. Desk clerk moved us to another room which was fine. However, there, the previous couch sleeper sheets were not removed. We stayed in the room and had to get new sleeper sheets.
Other than that, hotel is in great shape. Rooms are nice. Breakfast attendant was especially hospitable. Cleaning staff was friendly as well. I'm sure my room cleanliness issue is not the norm, and would stay here again.

We enjoyed a relaxing, comfortable night at this almost new motel. The staff was accommodating; the property was clean and neat and the room was spacious and included a fridg and microwave. I was most impressed at the breakfast selection as I usually have a hard time finding food that is 'healthy' at a breakfast selection. This hotel offered plain yogurt and thus no sugar. Great! Now if we could get some whole grains! I would recommend this hotel to anyone going thru or staying in the area

We began staying at the Salem Holiday Inn Express last year on our travels between Atlanta and Philadelphia. Though there are many other choices, including HIE's, that are about half-way, this one surpasses our experience at all other hotels in this class.

Very poor service from desk clerk when I checked in late in the evening. Clerk didn't include internet password. I woke up early and couldn't log on to check email. Finally got the password from the front desk, but I had to let the phone ring for quite some time.
No hot breakfast items at 6:30AM. Cold stuff out, no one around to ask. I left and went to McDonalds for breakfast.
Clean hotel, lousy service. Not recommended.

Overall a very good overnight. Only comment I would make is that on arrival, the desk clerk took a phone call - which was fine but he probably should have said excuse me or had the person on the phone put on hold as it was an internal query about the TV and I had arrived before the phone call.
Also the lady who was setting up the breakfast did not seem like a morning person. She was not rude or anything but she could have said good morning or something. She definitely did not smile. A regular did talk to her and she responded in a friendly manner but it would help to treat those who are new a little cordially. Also, if breakfast is at 0630, the food should have been ALL out by 0630 but things just dribbled out until about 0640. This might be a problem for someone who is in somewhat of a hurry. Neither of the above we big issues but it might help for customer service. Otherwise, everyone was very courteous and the room was very comfortable.
I did note that all the pillows in the room had pillow cases that said SOFT so there were no other options. Didn't bother me because I like soft!!

We chose Holiday Inn Express because we always count on them for cleanliness and a good breakfast. We chose Salem because it was the lowest priced HIE in the area. They had all of the usual ammenities that we count on, but I must have been allergic to something in the room. I have dust allergies, but there was no obvious dust in the room. I was up all night with a runny nose. I could have called the front desk, but we were too tired to deal with it. I felt better after breakfast the next morning and we were on our way.
I recommend this property if you're not allergic to dust.
