Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable rooms We stayed in room 402. Very spacious room and comfortable bed but the musty odor was very stong. The smell went away after the AC was turned on for a while...or maybe we just got used to it. The cigarette smoke smell by the front door is also a big turnoff. As my wife and I were sitting in the front lobby area in the evening the lady at the front desk kept making comments about having to work by herself on a day when a large group was arriving....we were part of that group. The parking is very limited. We were there with 2 school busses and 2 pickups with trailers. We were told where to park but then were blocked in the next morning and had difficulty getting vehicles moved to get to our event. Kudos to the lady that kept enough breakfast food out to feed our group of app 120. Overall, a good hotel for families or small groups but I would not recommend it for large groups or people with large vehicles. November 7, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Beware of Beggars Check in was friendly and efficient. Acknowledged as priority club members and advised parking was free. We also received a bag containing 2 bottles of water and some cookies. The room was quite small but clean and comfortable but there were some places on the ceiling which had either been re-painted or missed when the room was decorated as the ceiling had 2 different colours of paint. Breakfast doesn't have a wide choice but there is enough. However, the breakfast area is in the lobby and, on our first morning, a beggar came in off the street and asked us for money on the excuse he needed it to get home. My wife later overheard him in the street boasting he had enough to get some beer. When you are sitting having your breakfast you don't want to be hassled this way. Hotel is within reasonable walking distance of all amenities including the Alamo. November 4, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome room, close to Riverwalk and other attractions Room was awesome! Breakfast foods had been there for a while but edible. Microwave in room was dirty with dried food and popcorn kernels. Overall, we liked the room and our stay. November 2, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by smelly hotel and need more parking When we walked into the hotel it was musty smell, need more parking. October 30, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Location and comfort Location was great. Mistakenly chose this hotel thinking it was on the riverwalk a little disappointed at first but the 3 block walk was not bad. First room we were assigned had a smell ask to be reassigned and this was done promptly. Very quiet and comfortable. Loved the history behind the building. October 24, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Kept trying to get in our room! We checked in on Friday, Oct 4 and were given room 404. Around midnight, someone tried to get in our room. We decided it was probably a drunk and waited for them to see the key didn't work and go away. They did, but a few minutes later suddenly the lock turned and someone was coming in our room! Fortunately, the safety latch caught. I began yelling for whoever it was to get out. It turns out it was a hotel employee! He never identified himself or knocked first. What were his intentions? We were told it was an honest mistake and they didn't know the room was occupied. Three times in the night someone tried to get in. Three times. Not acceptable. We complained the next day and never heard one word from anyone regarding an apology. We will never stay at this property again and cannot recommend it to anyone else. October 22, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Jody NIce hotel. The beds were comfortable and room was clean. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Nice to have a breakfast available. The only thing that was bothersome was the smell. It was very musty smelling. When the air conditioner kicked in it would get worse. I would recommend staying here to anyone, but I would warn them first of the smell. October 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great [;ace It was great sleeping in a former jail. It was also close enough to walk and see everything available. October 15, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice hotel, relaxing time A very comfortable, relaxing experience in a nice hotel. Very clean and nice rooms with everything you could need. Queen size beds was a big plus for us with 4 in a room. The pool and hot tub were very comfortable and enabled us to come back and relax outside well into the night. Nice stroll to the Riverwalk and Alamo. Wonderful full breakfast in the morning with many choices including eggs, sausage, pancakes as well as the cold stuff and breads. Very friendly staff. If I go back to San Antonio, I'd definitely stay here. Less expensive than other hotels in the area that I looked at and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Only drawback for some - I wouldn't walk around outside alone at night. October 10, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Misleading advertising of location BUT We were traveling and trying to make reservations to stay at a Holiday Inn Express on the Riverwalk while driving. The name: Holiday Inn Express San Antonio N-Riverwalk Area led us to believe that this hotel was in the Riverwalk vicinity when in actuality it is a 5 block walk to the area. That being said, we would have missed two excellent restaurants in the Market Square which was 3 blocks from this hotel. The hotel was clean and our overall stay was very good, but the area it is located in was questionable. We saw homeless sleeping in the dark doorways and got asked for handouts once. October 10, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by What a Gem! I stay in many Holiday Inn Expresses, but this hotel was not like the others. Very clean, high ceilings, quiet and close to the River Walk. The price compared to other hotels in the area was very reasonable. It is in a historic building that used to be the old Bexar County Jail! Very cool, not creepy at all. I highly recommend this hotel if you need to be on the Walk, but budget is limited. October 7, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Friendly staff and comfortable accommodations Nicely redone historic jail. Greek yogurt would be wonderful. Any yogurt without artificial sweetners would be a great improvement. Bathroom could have been cleaner- baseboards and tops of things not very clean. Fantastic staff. October 5, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by IHG Lost Me I am not one to complain and generally deal with a lot of things that are not right. But this is the last time I will not have a request met by Holiday Inn Express and because of this I will not longer stay at an IHG property. I had reservations for two queen beds, and was given a room with two full beds in handicap. I asked for them to fix this and she would not she said it was normal. It is not normal and it is not normal to take a shower where the shower head keeps falling. The handicap room should be just for that someone who needs it and if you advertise queen bed that is what you should get. Any how good bye IHG. October 1, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poor air conditioning and room too small The old building (converted jail) may contribute to the room size (the smallest we experienced with Holiday Inn Express) but in top of it we were unable to stop or regulate the air conditioning. The entire room lacks air movement and the smell was not "fresh" September 27, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Exceeded expectations Room was updated/modern and everything working great - including great water pressure in shower. Small pool area but big enough to stretch out and relax. Location great - close to Riverwalk but without the high price of being on the river. And best of all - the staff was more than accommodating, friendly and eager to please. September 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Room and Service I enjoyed my stay at the holiday inn express. It was just what I needed for my trip. September 25, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful I had a great stay . I my stay was a great experience . The history about this hotel was great. we will sure stay here again . thank you so much September 25, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Could be better- could be worse This hotel being an old jail is neat from a historical stand point but doesn’t really mean it’s the best building for a hotel. The old windows are part of the historic look of the building, but they are nearly inoperable which meant we couldn’t open them and allow some fresh air into the room. The rooms are small and not very well laid out. The pool is very small and was out of order when we were there (fixed the morning we left). There were construction workers in the hotel every day we were there which got annoying. On the positive side, the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. They knew the area well and made some great suggestions for places to go eat. The breakfast was hot and had a great selection. It’s only a few bocks away from the river walk- nice because the crowds arent right outside your door. If you’re looking to experience San Antonio and need a decent place that doesn’t cost as much as a high end hotel right off of the riverwalk, this is your place. If you’re looking for a hotel to write home about look some where else. September 24, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 Don't stay here I have found management to to be completely unreasonable. There hotel is in a very bad neighborhood. September 18, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Grat historical locale Small problem with the room (air conditioning was leaking on the floor). The problem was corrected by a generous adjustment to the bill. THANKS! September 10, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great service great room Loved the hotel and all the service people. We stayed at hotel along with our friends. , and had a great vacation. There was a problem where a door fell on me , I was not hurt bad just a cut , but manager never came to see how i was doing. September 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable Matress, Staff gave every effort to accomodate and smile. Excellent Service and Great experience in an old Jail building. Wish parking had more spaces availble and parking spaces were cramped if you have an SUV, but all in all, Fantastic place to visit and stay at. Thanks. September 5, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It's an old jail We loved the historical aspect of the hotel. It was neat to read all about it. It would have been cool to see the trap door for hangings on the second floor. The rooms are on the smaller side but perfect for what we need. Free parking for IHG members is a nice perk. August 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful Historic Hotel My husband and I stayed at this Holiday Inn for three nights in August. It was a pleasant experience. We arrived at 1:00 and the room was ready for us. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the AC worked well. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The woman who prepared and set up breakfast was friendly and appeared to be a hard worker. The parking was across the street(not a busy street), but it was never a problem. My only minor complaint was the fitness room - the television and the water fountain did not work. The treadmill worked well enough for a short workout, although the numbers were far from accurate. This hotel was a short walk to the popular Riverwalk. Overall, this prior jail was a wise choice and I would stay here again. August 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful staff! The staff was wonderful - very helpful. The desk manager gave us a great recommendation for a restaurant just down the street, and she offered us water bottles to take when we left the hotel for our long trip to our next stop. August 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Stay here Greated with snacks and water, waived parking charge because I was a priority club platinum member. Great place. Do yourself a favor and stay at this Holiday Inn. August 23, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Ok experience There was not much parking place I didn't feel my vehicule was safe. The area for breakfast was too small not that many tables. The food was going too fast because of the aumoth of people there and the server looked like she was in a bad mood (the one on sat morning) the one on Sun morning much better. On rm 512 there was a water on the carpert and it smell really bad August 21, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Clean and close Clean. Close to river walk area bars and nightlife August 20, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice hotel with and friendly service If you are looking for a very nice hotel just down the street from the Riverwalk, this hotel is perfect. Our room was clean and fresh. Furniture was spotless and new-looking. The bathroom had a shiny granite countertop, and the fixtures looked new and sparkling. I didn't mind walking on the carpet without shoes because it looked fresh and clean. The queen beds were equipped with plenty of fluffy pillows and snow-white sheets. Employees of the hotel always had smiles on their faces and friendly attitudes. The breakfast was ample and inviting, although seating was a little crowded--but that is not anything unusual. We stayed here rather than on the Riverwalk because the price was slightly cheaper. If you're looking for the "total Riverwalk experience," I would suggest finding a hotel located on the Riverwalk, but if you don't mind walking a tiny bit, this hotel is great. Don't forget to add parking fee: $16 for the parking lot across the street. The only weird thing about this hotel is that it was once a jail. If you are a pragmatic person, this won't bother you at all. #The rooms did not look or feel anything remotely like jail cells--they were large and roomy.# August 18, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by The Staff! The BEST thing about this hotel is the STAFF! We got in late on 6 Aug 13. I had drove from Biloxi MS. It was a long ride, we were all very tired. The staff was GREAT. One guy even helped me with the bags and let me know he would watch my car foe me. The ONLY issue and I mean ONLY issue with this place is the the room A/C would only get the room down to 76 degrees. I will stay here again. If the management doesn't take care of the two guys that checked us in I will try my best to hire them away from HI Express! August 18, 2013
