Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable bed and excellent staff. The front desk staff does a very efficient job to make sure that you have an excellent memorable stay. Tamika and Jason go out of their way to accommodate you in any way that they can. I can't forget Alex who drives the shuttle, and was very helpful with information on recommending what area attractions to see. The breakfast has an excellent selection. My only complaint was that the restaurant on their website has closed. June 11, 2014

The Shuttle service was very good and took us to and from the Airport and the Zoo and Harbor. We would stay again on our next visit to San Diego Down Town location. June 10, 2014

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by It was ok... Hotel was HOT inside is was cooler outside than inside. The hotel had doors open and fans running behind the front desk. Front desk employee was either to over heated from the heat or something cause he was not friendly at all. Other guest were walking in the lobby commenting about how hot it was in the hotel lobby and hallways. However our room was very cool when you turn on the air conditioning. I WAS CHARGED $48.00 MORE A NIGHT THAN WHAT MY CONFIRMATION AND RESERVATION HAS ON IT. The parking garage is extremely small for SUV's the front desk told me to park on level 3 or 4. Trying to drive thru that parking structure in a SUV I had to make 3 point turns just to make it up the ramp to the next floor. When we checked out to leave the guard in the parking booth asks " what floor were you parked on I told her 4th, the hotel and your signs say hotel parking on 3 or 4 she replies with we normally have cars your size park on level 1 because up there its really small for cars like yours" May 22, 2014

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nice room and loved the welcome basket Although the website stated there was an on site restaurant - there was not! I asked at the front desk and it was permanently closed. This was a big factor in makng the reservation at this location since I knew I would not have a car. I was told by a friend that lives in San Diego not to walk around this area after dusk. So we had food delivered to our room from a local pizza place. This hotel did not have a hot tub which was also disappointing for me. The room was really nice and we had a balcony with an ok view but the bathroom was the smallest bathroom I have ever seen. The room was clean and the beds and pillows were delightful. We got there before 3 and there was no rooms available for an early check in. They did hold our bags for us and said they would call when the room was ready but they never did. We got back to the hotel a little after 3 and got in our room. April 12, 2014

The shuttle service to and from both the airport and cruise terminal were excellent. One of the nights we enjoyed the late afternoon complimentary bar service in the lobby. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by No platinum consideration... I have been platinum level for the past 2 years, is good to get something extra every time I'm traveling away from home. In my last stay over at the San Diego Holiday Inn express I was just one more guest. The staff in the front desk were more worried of what was going on behind the desk or in their mobile phones. I think they could improve the service. No extra points, no welcome package, not even a botle of water... The location is acceptable. February 24, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Property needs serious updating This property is obviously a very old hotel that was turned into a HI Express. The paint over old doors and walls does not update an old building. Bath had a toilet that could only be used if the bath door was completely closed. Door butted directly to from of toilet when opened half way. Mattress old and worn out. HVAC wall unit ran non stop and was undersized for room size. Better not have any vehicle over mid sized if you want to park in the archaic and confusing parking deck. Access to hotel elevator from deck VERY poorly marked. Had to walk around a bit to find in a hidden alcove. Very sketchy neighborhood. On the positive side the staff was very friendly and helpful. Nightly rate was reasonable for downtown but still not worth the rate. February 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The Staff was Amazing I have stayed at many hotels through my life but this was by far the most friendly hotel staff I have ever encountered. Other than one staff member, each was attentive to our needs and almost seemed like family by the time we left the hotel. They took the time to learn about us, know our names, including our kids, and ask us each day where we had ventured and offered to help us prepare for the next day's adventures. Kudos to whoever has trained the staff to be so amazingly friendly. The shuttle was also a luxury. It only drops at 4 locations but each location either put you at your destination or offered public transit to your destination. The rooms were a little outdated but the staff more than made up for the age of the rooms. I would highly recommend this hotel to any traveler looking for exceptional service in the downtown area. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Parking & Fee's The negativity to the stay besides it being a little over priced was the parking and the fact that don't give a military discount.. I travel a lot and this is the first time where no valet was offered and you had to pay to park in a parking garage. There was no street parking and to charge another fee on top of the fee is rediculous. The cost for our military to stay there was actually higher then the normal rates. This is rediculous. I can not believe any place would actually charge the men and woman who serve our country more to stay in their hotel. I think they need to highly reconsider this. If I hadn't gotten in so late I would have looked for another hotel simply because of the military rate. The room was comparable to most I stay in, the staff was friendly and the breakfast was good. I would not recommend this place because of it's treatment to our military only. February 12, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good bed; poor shuttle scheduling I had a good night's sleep, but I can't believe this property was remodeled in 2012. 1. The wallpaper is peeling from the walls near/in bathroom 2. The door to the bathroom is the skinniest I've ever seen 3. They use toilets left over from the Navy training base 4. Very slow draining tub 5. Housekeeping staff was polite 6. My biggest con: I called the property before making the reservation to find out about the availability of a shuttle. I was told there was a shuttle to/from airport, and to the zoo. My experience: the shuttle to the airport had a fixed closing time, which the staff did not tell me until I called from the airport. ~$20 ride to hotel from taxi. After checking in, made reservation for the shuttle to take me back to the airport the following morning. Came to the front desk, no shuttle. Front Desk staff called the shuttle, driver said he would return ~15 minutes. I didn't trust the estimate, so I took another taxi to the airport. I'm planning another visit to San Diego soon, and, will look beyond this property before making a reservation. February 12, 2014

Our stay in San Diego was made quite enjoyable by all that we saw and shared, but it was made even better by being made to feel we were visiting family, not just checking in to a Hotel! Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great location Good location to get to either the Embarcadero, Balboa Park and the Gaslight District. Room was comfortable. Small bathroom, but very clean. Staff were very friendly. There is a shuttle which you can take that will drop you off at 4 specific locations in the downtown area, we did not use this service so cannot comment. Also a happy hour each evening in the lounge. The only negative is that towels are removed daily. My understanding is that if you leave your towels on the towel bar, hook or shower rod, they should leave it. They take the towels away every day. This is not eco friendly in addition to the fact that there is a drought in California. February 9, 2014

Additional point for this hotel is that they have a shuttle bus which can help you go around San Diego. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by San Diego We travel a lot and stay at Holiday Inn's in the areas they are available. We arrived at the Holiday Inn-San Diego after a long car ride. We got out keys and went up to the room. The room looked lived in and was a mess. We dragged all of our luggage back down to the lobby. We had to wait a while to get an elevator because only one of the two were in working order. We explained the situation to the hotel staff and they looked at us like we had two heads. They gave us a new key and we went to another room. We didn't even get an apology which was very unlike the normal Holiday Inn staff. Several times we called down to the desk to arraign a cab ride and the calls went unanswered. We went downstairs and there were two front desk employee's just talking to each other. We weren't really sure why they didn't answer the phone. To say the least this was the worst Holiday Inn we have ever stayed. Luckily they are not all like that. January 5, 2014

The location is superb (walking distance to Gaslpamp with multiple restaurants) and the staff in this hotel is outstanding - so friendly and willing to help. I'd like to specifically mention Renee, the Relationship Manager at the hotel, who was so helpful. Free breakfast was a great beginning of our day and my son loved the pancakes:)The room was large and clean, the beds were very comfortable. Free hotel shuttle takes you from/to the airport, Zoo and other places of interest, so one could easily get by without using a car and worrying about parking. We've been frequent travelers and spoiled by 5-star hotels but this Holiday Inn Express exceeded all our expectations and we would definitely stay there again. January 3, 2014

Within walking distance to numerous restaurants and shopping locations. You get a wonderful hot breakfast that's included with every night's stay. The staff are friendly and super helpful!
