I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Silver Spring, MD and I was both pleasantly surprised and extremely satisfied with my stay. The staff was extremely attentive to our needs and very friendly. The parking area is a bit drab but appears safe and I was surprised that there was a fee of $10.00/day even though we were well out of the DC area. The other drawback I have is that the pillows were extremely soft and uncomfortable for my wife and I. They are sort of elongated and narrow. Overall, even though the outside grounds and parking area are not too exciting, you will be pleasantly surprised by your stay. The breakfast area is not drab and dull but not too "loud" either. The coffee selection is sufficient (even the canisters are decorated in the same theme the room is) and the food items are excellent and tasty. The supporting staff is friendly and excellent, the rooms are clean, the shower and vanity drains were not clogged. Toiletries were a bit scarce but towels were sufficient. The room did not have a musty smell and the carpets in both the hallways and room were clean or newly replaced. It is about a 15 minute walk to the Metro and then about a 40 minute ride on it to Central DC. Or you can drive into DC. I believe the hotel may have a shuttle bus but I am unsure. We were there on MLK weekend so there was not much traffic on driving in or out of DC. I highly recommend staying at this hotel if you are considering visiting DC. It is an excellent value for your money and you can visit downtown Sliver Spring with its many ethnic eateries and cafes.
