Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by falcon5 Comfortable bed and clean room but dreadful reception man
If it had been the first time I had ever stayed at a Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express I wouldn't use them again. The young man who greeted me was most unhelpful - did not know his job properly and argued about my booking even though I had my e-mail with me with details of booking on it. He was ignorant and didnt bother to look up when he spoke and made me wait until he was ready to speak without an apology. He refused to be of any help but thank goodness in the morning I had a very helpful gentleman who resolved all the problems in a matter of minutes - what a pity he wasn't on duty the night before. To have a receptionist argue with you about a booking when you have proof of your booking is totally unacceptable.

Rooms are fine, let down by not providing any decaffeinated coffee, even though it is advertised on menu's in the rooms as being provided. Also by the manager of the day Duane making facicious comments he thought I could'nt hear when i said it was ridiculous they do not provide decaff.

Excellent value, easy to find hotel & straightforward parking and transfer to Ocean terminal. Hotel was very busy, quite a lot of families with young children (hotel is close to Pepper Pig World), as a result breakfast was a bit chaotic but ok. Staff were very helpful and polite. Have already recommended this hotel to friends.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by GCLARK43 Clean comfy room, shame about the food
I came for a business trip and the location of the hotel was ideal for me. The room was at the end of a long corridor and was very quiet; also spotlessly clean. I could have done with an extra blanket, but that's just my preference. There are lots of young children staying here, so other areas of the hotel may be a little noisier at times.
I ate in the restaurant the first night and that was a huge mistake. As a starter I ordered 'crispy breaded mushrooms with a garlic mayo dip.' What I GOT was chewy mushrooms in a soggy coating and no dip. The main course, a tart, managed to be overcooked round the edges and the #unexpected# sliced potato on top partially raw. If I hadn't been so tired and hungry I would have sent it back and gone out for a meal.
There were few staff around for the number of people needing attention, and I didn't anticipate any replacement to be likely to be any better; so I waited til checkout to say how awful this was.
The man on reception said I wasn't the only one to mention the food, and that they are planning a new kitchen. No excuse for serving bad food, though. There was also no compensation offered or any way of making me feel I would want to return.
I won't be back, and it's a shame, because it is down to the food. #I mentioned it to my boss, who had stayed there before, and he told me that yes, the food was bad, but he had forgotten to tell me in everything else going on. So it wasn't, sadly, a one off.#

Perfect location for a nights stay ahead of a visit to Peppa Pig World. Room was comfortable and quiet. A bit of a pain to only have a shower in the bathroom with a small child but for one night our daughter enjoyed the novelty of it. Staff very helpful and friendly. A good value break.

I have stayed at loads of Holiday Inns and HI Express but this is one of the most difficult ones to review. The hotel itself is modern and clean and just off the Motorway. I was there on business but the hotel was mainly full (and I mean FULL) of families with young children presumably staying before or after a cruise. Absoloutely impossible to relax in the bar/restaurant. That said, the rooms are comfortable and I slept really well. I was also surprised as there are no real facilities for children.
The food is TERRIBLE. This is not the fault of the staff as I suspect the food is ordered centrally but Holiday Inn really need to do something about this. I ordered lasagne with salad and a side of garlic bread. The lasagne arrived without even a pretence that it had been freshly made (microwave container shaped and burnt around the edge). The side salad was some iceberg lettuce and some tomato/cucumber with heinz salad cream on the side. The garlic bread consisted of three anaemic slices. TERRIBLE. Breakfast was a disaster as there really were so many young families that it was chaos. Messy tables and children running around unsupervised.
This said, the staff were BRILLIANT. Every one of them gave an excellent service and were polite despite the obvious pressures they were under.
In short, a great one night stay if you are in the area and don't mind a bar full of children. Just don't try to relax in the bar and AVOID the food.

My wife and I stayed for one night before we sailed on a cruise from Southampton. The check in was quick and the receptionist very friendly and helpful. We requested the same room we have had on previous visits and this was sorted for us before we arrived. The room was very clean and the beds comfortable. The only drawback was there are no baths, only showers, which didn't suit my wife as she likes a bath - but for one night this isn't a problem. All in all we would recommend this Holiday In Express to anyone.

Good location. Rooms are as expected - clean and no-nonsense. Showers fab. Breakfast basic but fine - eggs, sausage, toast, cereals, croissant...but plenty of it considering the hotel was full so good in that respect.
Didn't eat in hotel, but visited the Ship Inn, around 2/3 miles away (menu available at reception) which was absolutely excellent and highly recommended.

This hotel did exactly what it said on the tin.... it served it purpose very well and was clean. Breakfast was a little chaotic as so many people arrived at the same time, but staff coped if you asked them for anything. We would come again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by pilot40 Good for cruise and park
The staff were excellent and, when there was a power cut, even told us where we could get a local dinner. When we arrived back after the meal, the power was back on so they could have withheld the name of the alternative place to eat. The only disappointment was the breakfast which was only adequate but, as it was free, we are certainly not complaining. It was excellent value as a cruise and park hotel and ideal if you don't want to drive into Southampton after a long journey.

Booked this for a quick stop over with my husband and daughter (almost 3 yrs old). Room clean and basic as expected. We had booked a family room but sofa bed not made up so had to call reception. In fairness they came within 30mins to make the bed up. The sofa bed was very lumpy and uncomfortable. At breakfast time many tables not cleaned and limited breakfast choice. Not proper rice crispier/cocoa pops so daughter would not eat it.
Overall stay ok but following night we stayed at express by holiday inn at jct 7 of m27 only approx 15 mins drive away and this was far superior. Sofa bed and main bed very comfortable and rooms more modern and better breakfast choice/general hotel environment. Pick this hotel over Southampton west any day.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Cherri Misleading and disappointing !
When booking online,I thought the hotel was conveniently situated to the West Quay cruise terminal. We may have saved on accomodation, but we only got what we paid for. It cost us a fortune in taxi fares . We felt isolated. The staff were not over friendly, a breakfast was poor and tables were not clean. All in all a disappointing start to our holiday. I would not recommend the hotel neither would I stay there again. I would rather pay a bit extra for a City shuttle and decent food . Cold scrambled egg, a toaster that fell apart ... A bit Fawlty towers !!! My bed was not even made properly!!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LT01 Great Service & Able to Relax
I use this hotel on a weekly basis whilst attending University part time. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and the check in is quick and easy. The rooms are always spotless and have everything you could need for a few nights away. Tea and coffee facilities in your room, and their are extras in the bar if you run out. The toilet facilities are cleverly designed, which still allows privacy. The bed is comfortable you have the choice of firm or soft pillows to suit most people. The rooms have electric heaters, and these are normally set to A (automatic) but we have worked out that if you set them to M (manual) you can work out the setting with suits your nights sleep. There are a few free view channels to keep you entertained, as well as the usual 1-5.
There is ample parking available to the hotel. Would recommend to others.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Sara100 Worst stay in a HolidayInn Express by far!
I stay in HolidayInns or HolidayInn Express approx 12-14 times a month, and this is my worst stay, ever, by far.
Disgusted by my treatment at check in, the guy didnt know what he was doing and spoke to me like dirt.... No acknowledgement of being a priority club member either. After him messing me about for ages I got to my room....
Or should I say fridge! I spent the evening under the covers in my clothes, it was soooo cold. No heating what so ever ( snowing outside!)
On check out, I discovered my "pre-authorisation" had now become a payment, ( was checking out at 10am, so it wasnt a late check out) basically taking my payment without any authorisation... This was taken 11 minutes after I checked in, even though I stated I would be using a different card or cash when leaving....and was told that would be fine.
All other HI hotels take payment on check out....
The manager agreed this was the case here too, and this was a "mistake" that's about where his apology ended..... The rest was just rudeness, confrontational and ignorance. I asked for his name and head office phone number...he then turned into a polite man. Too blooming late!
I complained to head office who said the manager would be intouch with an explanation and apology..... That was a week ago. I've heard nothing!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Mulli33 Tired facility and staff
I have stayed twice at the HI Southampton West and as a regular guest at Holiday Inns, this is by far the worst.
The first time I stayed the service from the front was poor with 4 staff in the office chatting about their 'bedroom' exploits whilst guests were waiting to check in. The hotel was dirty for example the tables in the restaurant area uncleared and dirty from breakfast.
The second time I stayed the receptionist kept calling me 'mate' and was wearing a shrt with a frayed collar. When I asked him for an iron and ironing board to be sent to my room; he said he was busy and could not leave the front desk. Again there were staff chatting in the office and 2 watching the football. I was given the iron and ironing board and carried it to my room along with the bags I arrived with. The iron itself was unusable and unsafe because the base had had material burnt onto it and the plug was smashed so the wires were exposed.
This is the first time I have felt that I should write a review, so hopefully these issues can be addressed. It is just getting the basics right!

Ideally situated for Isle of Wight ferry - only 10mins run into centre. Quiet location - need a car to get to any shops/pubs etc. Hotel was clean and well laid out. Had everything needed on site. Has bar meal in the evening so did not need to worry about finding restaurant. Breakfast good and plenty of choice

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by MrsSR Not at all Holiday Inn Standard!
Been on two days family trip. On the day of arrival, room was full of dust particles, windows aren't double-glazed, too noisy because of the motorway traffic as room's window was facing towards the motorway. There is no central heating/ temperature control in the room.
Appaling Food / Service- Very poor choice for Breakfast/ Dirty and unwashed cutlery/plates- Service extremely poor. No choice for vegetarians- requested for vegetarian sausage as they served only pork sausages/ scrambled eggs but I was told that was only food they could serve. Tables are so closely arranged- there is hardly any space for movement. This hotel is not upto the Holiday Inns' Standards!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Nick51 Noisy and Cold
Even after requesting a quiet room , i was left in a cold room with ill fitting windows on the side of a motorway , the room heater went off at 4.30 am and i had to get fully dressed to keep warm. This was a most appalling experience , and after highlighting my disappointment when checking out was assured that the General Manger would call me that morning , 10 days later i am still waiting for that call. The food in the evening lacked choice and was only average quality , certainly not value for money , and if you dont mind waiting the service was average as well. In the morning the coffee machine was broken "again" and the quality agian only average. Stay at your peril , unless you like the noise of traffic and sleeping in the cold !

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by hotelcharliek Another less than inspiring stay in this hotel
This is the closest hotel to my work so it is an easy choice, but it's nothing special. The Holiday Inn in the centre of town is outside of my company budget so my choice is made for me.
My room this time faced the motorway with traffic passing by all night. The window would not close properly so the cold wind and the traffic noise was with me all night.
The room heater was pathetic so my noisy, windy, cold room was not very impressive. Not great for a relatively new hotel.
The staff in the morning asked if everything was OK, only to show complete disinterest when I began to tell them about my room.
I don't use the restaurant because of bad experiences in the past.
I spend 50-100 nights away each year so I have to tolerate many things, but this hotel seems to present a different issue with most of my stays.

We visit this hotel regularly, and will continue to do so, because we get very good value for the budget price. The staff always give a very warm welcome. The rooms, bathrooms and public areas are always clean and, although fairly basic, have everything we need for a short stay. Excellent all round.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by alan345 Interesting double glazed windows !
The hotel was very easy to find and I thought the staff were great. Breakfast wasn’t anything special but was acceptable.
The double glazing however was without doubt the worst double glazed window I’ve ever come across. I have never, never, experienced a draft coming through the frame of a double glazed window; the noise reduction was minimal as was the heat retained in the rooms.
What a shame to be let down by the windows – if I were the hotel I’d seriously consider setting on to get my money back.

I booked 9 rooms for the use of friends who were visiting for my 65th Birthday party.
On the Sunday morning before departing everyone said how pleased they were with the hotel. From the clean airy rooms, to the friendly helpful staff, the praise was unanimous. I am still getting thanked, in every email and letter I receive.
I could not have wished for better help, from a hotel.

The stay was OK based on price but don't expect a good night sleep. The beds are extreemley bouncy so when one person moves your partner wakes up!
This is the second time I've mentioned the beds to staff so it seems they are all the same design.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Tony1962 Management attention to issues needed
On the plus side, the attitude of the staff at the hotel was very good- friendly, welcoming and professional. Also, we had use of a microwave in the breakfast room at all hours to heat milk for our baby.
However... we had booked originally to have a room with 2 beds for parents and 2 young boys, along with a cot for the baby, and to be safe I rang the hotel direct the day before our stay to check on the cot. I was promised that the cot would be in the room. On arrival, not so - the receptionist had to get a cot ready for us, but as she had no note of the requirement did not have clean sheets ready - fortunately we'd taken our own as a precaution.
As we were looking for somewhere to eat, the receptionist directed us to a nearby Beefeater, though it would be useful if the hotel had details of local establishments and phone numbers as we arrived there to find an hour's wait for a table with 3 hungry and tired boys under 6. After a quick search around the area for alternatives we returned to eat at the hotel, though by this time it was really too late for the children, and although our preferred choices on the menu were available, the food at the hotel was actually good.
More significantly, once we'd got the boys ready for bed we discovered that the electric convector heater in the room (the only source of heating) did not work, and on one of the coldest nights of the year we actually had a draught coming from behind it all night long. When I went back to the receptionist I was informed that all the hotels portable heaters had already been distributed from the day before as there were problems with heating in many of the rooms. I was offered a change of room, but having the children already asleep this was impractical. I was also offered additional blankets, which was not ideal as the baby will not sleep with any sheets or blankets over him so we had to trust our body heat to keep temperatures from dropping too low.
My main concern is that there was apparently a known problem with heating throughout and despite the hotel management being aware of this no efforts appeared to have been made to address this, or to provide adequate alternative solutions for the number of rooms affected.
