Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Marsi123 a bit off the "fun part of Duluth"
Located on a city street a few blocks away from the desired Canal Area, this Holiday Inn is in an urban area. We went for a walk at night after checking in and quickly turned around when we saw a residential living program. As we were walking back a police car pulled up to that store front.
As for the hotel itself it was a mixed bag. We checked-in in the evening, after dinner. We went to our room and found it located next to the kiddie pool. When I went to request a room change I was told that was all that was available.
My husband then went to the front desk and he was told the same thing. Since we had just flown in from California, we were concerned about the noise beginning earlier than we wanted to wake up. As we were walking back to the room an employee tracked us down and said he had heard us talking and there was another room available that should be quieter. IT was a handicapped room.
That turned out to be perfect and we slept until after 10:00.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by koj1keitz Good stay in a great location
This property is located very close to the heart of downtown Duluth, just blocks from Canal Park and convenient to nearly anywhere in town. The entrance to the hotel is a bit different, buried inside a parking ramp so no Lobby Entrance is obvious from outside around the building. The parking is a little odd also, with all of it within the attached ramp, which is shared with the retail shops of the building as well. Past that, once in the main lobby everything appeared to be modern, current, well taken care of, and clean. Polite staff was helpful. Room was quite clean and comfortable. The tub/shower temperature control was backwards from what you normally encounter. Room was quiet. Restaurant situation is a bit odd, with none of the "hotel restaurants" actually residing INSIDE the hotel, but rather in the attached retail shop area. The nice family restaurant was only open for breakfast and lunch, the sandwich shop (with no dedicated seating) was similar. The "dinner" restaurant was actually the bar, and not classy at all. Other than that, a very nice place to stay. Prices are high in the summer in Duluth, but that's every hotel because Duluth is a hot vacation spot.

Easy check in from the parking ramp. Counter help spoke a little to fast for my liking. Port side room had a nice view of the Twin Ports. But in the morning. going down for breakfast was a big let down. Gas stations have a better selection in their deli's. They have more room to sit and relax at a gas station. And the upkeep of gas station table settings is cleaner. The window black box paint is chipped and scratched. And the grill work above that has as much dust as it can hold, on it.
That's why I expected better.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junebug1909 Terrible experience
My family and I were in Duluth for a fun weekend, as we had booked a train ride. We had relatives from out of state who had never been to Duluth before, and after this experience, will probably never come back. I made reservations well in advance, to accomodate for two young children. I requested either adjoining rooms, or rooms right next to each other. When we arrived at 3:30, we were told our rooms were not ready because they were still being cleaned, but would be guaranteed by 4:00. When we went back up to the desk at 4:00, our rooms were still not ready, and we ended up waiting until 5:30 to get our rooms. We were told other rooms were ready, but they were not next to each other. This is not what we had requested. When we finally got up to our rooms, 1.5 hours after our "guaranteed" time, they were filthy. The bathroom floor looked as though it had not been cleaned, there was hair and dirt around the base of the toilet, hair on the sink, the top of the fridge was filthy, there were wrappers under the furniture, and supposedly we waited because the rooms were being cleaned. Unfortunately, we did not have the luxury of waiting for other rooms, as we had a baby that needed to nap. When we checked out, the price we were told to pay for the rooms was not what we were quoted when I originally booked the rooms. When we asked if there was a hospitality discount, we were asked why we did not mention to the front desk that our rooms were dirty. Why should we have to tell you that your staff did not do their job? And why should we have been more inconvenienced when you knew well in advance that we were staying at your hotel? Also, we had to park in the oversize part of the hotel, and that was terrible. Go through an alley, it was dark, and smelly, and not at all a place for children. The manager at the front desk was not at all receptive to any of the complaints we made, and pretty much said it was my fault because I chose to wait for the rooms we had requested. We stayed at this hotel before, and never had an issue, but we were extremely disappointed with this stay, and will never stay here again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by janece62 Friendly check in staff and ccomfortable room
I had booked our room using the 1-800 number on the internet and in order to get the price quoted on the internet, they said I had to take a handicap accessible room. When we arrived, the gentleman checking us in, upgraded us to the room we actually wanted at no extra charge. We were traveling by bike so needed laundry facilities. They were clean and very reasonable in price. We hope to return to Duluth in the future to see more of the sights and would definitely stay here again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by PMcCinDC Good city location
I had a comfortable, clean, modern room. The AC was too cold when I arrived, but that was easily remedied. The only significant drawbacks were that it was very dark, overlooking one of the pools--and the pool didn't close till 10:30 pm, with lots of screaming kids right up to closing time. The hotel is in a convenient location in downtown Duluth, but has a strange, uninviting entrance via a parking ramp. The restaurants are at street level, below the lobby, and are in a quite dirty public area just inside from a busy bus stop. The offerings at the cafe were much less appealing than at a Starbucks a block away. But staff there and in the hotel itself were pleasant and helpful. My selection was based on limited availability on a summer weekend in Duluth; the accommodations were good if expensive. But I think the overall ambiance of the facility makes it less likely that I would stay on any return visit.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by bgriff Noisy air conditioner , refrigerator odor
The room had a pretty strong odor coming from behind the refrigerator. When we got in the room there was 1 towel, wash cloth and face towel for a 2 bed sofa suite. The air conditioner made a lot of noise when it kicked on, sounded like a welder kicking in. I expected better considering the price of the room. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed in during a 5 day trip, worst of the bunch.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Times9 Excellent attitudes from front desk, maintenance and maid
We had nothing but an excellent service from all areas of this hotel!! The hot tub and pool were the best for temperatures of any place that we have ever stayed. The young lady that checked us in was outstanding to make sure that we were happy. We had trouble the first day with the air conditioner and the maid had the maintenance person to the room within 5 minutes and he was excellent. We had a pool side suite and loved it. We will not stay at any other hotel in Duluth when we go back. Thank you Holiday Inn and Suites for making our stay one to remember!!!!

Needed a quiet comfortable place to stay for a few days while visiting Duluth and this fit the bill perfectly. Room was very clean and the bed comfortable. Front desk staff was excellent.
Getting to the hotel and negotiating the parking garage for check in can be time consuming. And the downtown Duluth area is not the greatest at night. But I had no problems.
Overall, I had a great stay.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by WingsFan EXTREMELY NOISY FROM THE POOL
We were very disappointed with our stay. They gave us a suite one level up from the pool and you heard screaming kids all evening until they shut the pool at 10:30pm. We complained the first night and were told they were completely sold out. We complained again on the third night and their solution was to offer us breakfast, which we declined. We could not relax in our room and spent the evenings we were at the hotel in the lobby. I did a prepaid room and was not even allowed to cancel and change hotels. Very disappointed in the entire stay! Felt we should have been offered a refund on at least part of our stay since we couldn't even enjoy our room.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Caryl1205 Great service, great room!
I would recommend this hotel. But first make sure you are a IHG rewards member! They make sure to take care of their members and we sure got that when we stayed!
I didn't want to pay more for a lake view room but when I booked I asked to be upgraded if the rooms were available , and sure enough we got lucky! The view of the lake is beautiful!
Also when you book make sure you're up on floors 7 and above. Because 7 and up need a key, levels 6 and lower essentially anyone can get to those levels. Yes, even people not stating there if they enter from the holiday center.. And travel in the elevators.
We did not take the decc tunnels, but they're are a cool thing to offer! And will use them next time we stay!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Minnesota Traveler Nice, but not so nice
It is a nicely updated hotel, however there are some things that make the stay not so wonderful. First to start is the 20 minute wait to get on the small, slow, and extremely busy elevators. Then when you finally get to your relaxing suite, you find out that it is overlooking a pool that is LOUD and noisy in the room. Unable to relax or sleep till the pool closed at 10:30 pm. Some better sound management techniques should have been used at the last remodel. The room was clean. The two restaurants that are part of the hotel have fair food, nothing more then your average bar or cafe food. Big plus is that the hotel is attached to the skyway system. Would not recommend paying for a weekend stay in a suite to relax and to be stuck listening to screaming kids in the pool. A room like that should overlook the city.

We had to change rooms shortly after checking in as one of the beds had a lot of black dog hair on the white sheets. I was offered a Benadryl by the front desk and I declined as I had my own allergy medication with me. We were offered another room that was not as nice as the first room and smelt smokey. We also found a little more black dog hair on both bed sheets and cleaned it off ourselves. The front desk did not call to ask if the room was okay or not. At 7:30 am the next morning, hammer drilling on concrete from another floor started (I guess they are doing renovations) which woke us up. At 9:00 am, the room cleaning staff knocked on my door when I had the "do not disturb sign" posted outside the door. As I was leaving to check out, 2 cleaning staff women where talking in another language to each other in a heated conversation by the 8th floor elevator lobby and I had to ask them to move so I could manover the luggage cart into the elevator. #I don't think they heard me and continued on with their heated conversation.# When we checked out, the front desk did not ask how our stay was or how the changed room was. When I asked where to return the luggage cart after loading my vechile, the front desk advised me to put it back in the parkade where I came from. No signage was indicated where exactly to return the luggage carts so I just left it outside the front parkade door. When we left the parkade, the night before and on the morning we were leaving, they was no parkade attendant at the exit either time, so we just left our parking ticket on the gate box exit.

We enjoyed Becky at Sneakers Bar who is the Bartender there. She makes our trip so wonderful and she is very nice! She is the biggest reason why we come back to Holiday inn Duluth.
The only thing I would complain about is the 15 percent charge when you check in. I thought that was horrible and kind of ruin the start of our vacation there. I never use room service or order movies, so I am not sure why I needed to be charged an extra 15 percent at check in. I was charge almost an extra 130 dollars at check in and they never explain that to me until I looked at my bank statement when I got to my room. I think the next time I stay there I should not be charged an extra 15 percent because I don't use any services there and it cost way to much extra.

THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE ever of my 26 years of business travel.
Frank (Manager) helped me extend another night stay over the 4th of July while I was on business travel during the 2nd and 3rd of July.
This was not easy because the service and answers I got over the phone from the Holiday inn customer care was less than stellar!!
They denied my extended stay over the phone for the 4th and made it very difficult to qualify for another nights stay for reward points after my business stay. They also took an hour to resolve wi them on the phone. However, Frank did a great job helping out and acomedating us to stay in the same room and spoke to the customer care for us and validated the stay.
Frank had the foresight to recognize my Elite status and also noticed a worked for a large company -ITW.....Thank you and I'll be back again!!!

Went to Duluth for a train excursion and stayed at the HI Downtown on a Friday night. Got in about 9 PM. The desk staff was great--very friendly and welcoming. We got a room on the 16th floor. It is clear this hotel has been remodeled--the rooms, carpet, bathrooms were all in great shape. The TVs in the room were very nice and channel selection was great as well. No charge for parking here. We've stayed in this hotel 3 or 4 times before but this was by far our best stay. Nice job!
