Kandooma Island lies 35km south of Male' International Airport, and in true tropical paradise fashion, the way to get here is via a 40-minute speedboat ride to the South Male Atoll. Transfer Charges: US$209 per adult and US$128 per child under 12 years old. Children under 4 years old travel for free. From November 1, 2014 Transfers will increase to US$219 per adult and US$134 per child under 12.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Rather disappointing experience The resort is an easy, though expensive, 45 minutes speedboat sail from the airport. We stayed for 5 days and had an in general good experience. Unfortunately we had a lot of rain and mainly cloudy days - I understood that that is not normal in mid December. The resort is fighting a battle against the sea with very considerable coastal erosion. Remnants of earlier actions were everywhere with sandbags trying to retain sand, rocks in metal cages and delapitated sea walls. Not the prettiest sight and far away from the picture postcard views we expected. The main beach next to the pool area and the beach to the south of that were ok and kept very clean. However, the sand removal by a large dredger and regular truckloads of sand being removed makes us wonder what it will look like in the future. We stayed in the beach house. Very basic accommodation and much smaller than we expected. The duplex is actually a rather small bedroom upstairs and an open area at ground level with some beach furniture. Quite grotty and not very inviting. The balcony with view of the beach and sea was nice in the evening. We have a 5 year old son who's rhythm is going to bed relatively early and waking up early. We enjoyed the breakfast after an early morning swim and especially enjoyed the vegetarian curries. Although not up to SE Asian standards, the breakfast was good. We would have liked to see more local fish in stead of the imported meat. Dinner times in the main restaurants did not really suit us so we had dinner at the poolside restaurant. This varied from good to acceptable to poor. We had the most expensive standard pizza ever (which was good), a fishermens platter, which once was excellent and the other time horribly over cooked, and some pastas, which would make an Italian cry. We went on one snorkelling trip. We were surprised by the uninterested behaviour of the staff. When I asked for life jackets for my family, I was replied by: "do you need one?". Others ended up with no life jackets and were obviously uncomfortable. One of the flippers I was given was ripped. I should have checked before leaving port, but no poor equipment should be given to guests. Staff on board were disinterested and just clustered on the front deck without paying attention to guests. No spare equipment was on board and they were unwilling to even help guests looking for a life jacket or myself trying to repair my fin. The only staff being with the guests did not speak English. Just orders were given. If you want to encourage guests to go on the paid snorkelling trips you have to tell them what they see, and what else they will see in other trips. The reef was absolutely beautiful and the snorkelling was great. We had quite mixed experiences with staff. We are living in the land of smiles (Thailand) and therefore standards are of course high. Staff were in general friendly and helpful, but most lacked professionalism. An example: the bill to be signed in the restaurant was obviously wrong. When challenged the staff member started arguing. No harsh words were spoken, but he threw the corrected bill in front of us an did not say a word. I can just guess that it is very difficult to find good experienced staff to work on the island. The kids club was absolutely great. The staff there did a fantastic job. I do not quite approve of crab races, but in general it was great and our son loved it. The new club only opened on 15 December and is a great facility. The outdoor part is still being build I guess quite a few weeks until that is finished. We were very unlucky with the weather, but still enjoyed the relaxing, the beach and the swimming. I guess you get what you pay for - compared to more expensive accommodation in other resorts. Overall we think the food and drinks are extremely over priced - not justified by arguments like- everything has to be flown in. Serve more local fish!And please, train the staff to not only be friendly but also professional. And get more female staff. December 22, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Comfort and good service Overall experience was good, warm comfort for the first time with IHG. Would be good though if the variety of food especially for children below 4 can be improved on, and reduce pricing of food, especially for Asian fare. Housekeeping service quality can be improved on, in terms of floor cleanliness and promptness of item replacement. This was probably due to different standard of housekeeping staff who made up the room. Would be good if it were the same staff for the entire stay. Evening/night indoor entertainment activities could also be improved on, for example, movies nights. December 20, 2014
