Stay in any one of IHG’s five New Delhi hotels and you will soon see the distinct differences between the old and new parts of this intoxicating city. The imperial capital of India and the seat of central government, New Delhi is a melting pot of language and culture, with British influences evident in the colonial ‘Lutyen’ architecture. The tree lined avenues here offer a little more legroom than the bustling streets of Old Delhi, but as you wander around you can still expect to hear a range of languages fighting for space including Hindi, English, Urdu and Punjabi. Connaught Place is a thriving business center to the north of the city, where banks, office buildings, restaurants and bars surround an impressive park.
The National Museum is an obvious starting point for anyone interested in learning more about Delhi’s past, but there is also much to be learned from the abundant architecture in and around New Delhi. Forts, shrines, temples and mosques are scattered in and around the city and all are breathtakingly beautiful. The Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is a magnificent Sikh shrine topped with gold domes, and the waters here are thought to have healing properties. Other sights worth a visit include the royal Rajpath which runs between the palatial Rashtrapati Bhavan and the India Gate war memorial. Pack a picnic and you can soak up the atmosphere from one of the grassy banks that border the mall.
For a more natural retreat, head to the National Zoological Gardens, India’s largest zoo. Here you can see rhinos, elephants, hippos, tigers, bears and many more species, as well as some stunning native birds. Alternatively indulge in the arts with a visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art and see what the creative scene has to offer.
Foodies will love the many flavours on offer in New Delhi, with Michelin star chefs lining up to rival the ever popular street food hawkers of Old Delhi. The city has undergone a gastro revolution in recent years and is now home to the most expensive Indian restaurant in the world as well as a diverse selection of quality eateries serving Japanese, French and Italian inspired dishes, so there’s sure to be plenty to whet your appetite.
You’ll quickly get caught up in the buzz of this lively city when you stay in one of IHG’s welcoming hotels in New Delhi. Receive a warm welcome at any one of our conveniently situated properties when you book your break with IHG today.
