London is, of course, very well connected and is the central hub for most of the country’s major train routes as well as the UK’s motorway network with no fewer than 9 different motorways intersecting the M25 orbital. The capital is also served by 5 international airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City.
London’s skyline is instantly recognisable throughout the world. There are the traditional and historic landmarks: the Palace of Westminster and the Elizabeth Tower housing the world famous Big Ben, the crossings over the River Thames such as Tower Bridge, and the spectacular Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, to name but a few. Then there are the more modern additions to the landscape: the Gherkin, the London Eye, the skyscrapers in the City, the O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome) and many more.
There is probably a shorter list of what you can’t do in London as opposed to what you can do. As one of Britain’s, Europe’s and even the World’s most important cultural centres, whatever you’re interested in, London has something for everyone. If Museums are your thing, London has hundreds to choose from and amongst those that certainly should not be overlooked are the British Museum, which houses the Rosetta Stone, the Natural History Museum where visitors can see dinosaur skeletons and a full-size blue whale, and the world’s largest urban museum; the Museum of London, which tells the story of the city throughout time.
Art lovers will not want to miss out on a visit to the world-renowned galleries that the capital has to offer. London has everything from works by the Old Masters to modern art, sculptures and photography. The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square is crammed with outstanding works of art from names such as Van Gogh, da Vinci, Renoir, Constable and many more. The Tate Modern on the banks of the Thames is Britain’s centre for modern and contemporary art and has pieces by celebrated artists such as Damien Hirst.
Live concerts, theatre, opera and ballet are all at home in London. Visit London’s West End to take in a musical at the Lyceum or the Palladium. Live music lovers could do worse than see their favourite acts at the enormous O2 arena or one of London’s other favourite music venues such as Brixton Academy or the phenomenal Union Chapel. If you’re looking for something truly special, book in at the Royal Opera House to see a ballet or opera performance or visit the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms season in the Summer.
If shopping is your thing, London offers a unique experience. You can browse the bustling shops of Oxford Street, Europe’s busiest shopping street, or take in the exclusive names in Bond Street. The Westfield shopping centres - one in White City, and the bigger of the two in Stratford, near the Olympic Park - are amongst the biggest in the UK and have everything from high street regulars and restaurants to cinema complexes. However, any shopping visit to London would not be complete without a visit to one of its incredible markets. Camden Market is the place to go for something uniquely alternative, whereas Borough market, with its vast range of fresh produce, is an absolute must for food lovers.
London is home to England’s national football stadium, Wembley. The city also boasts no fewer than 13 teams plying their trade in England’s professional leagues, making it a football fan’s paradise. Twickenham, England’s national rugby stadium and Lord’s, the home of English cricket, are located in Greater London making it the ideal location for any sporting pilgrimage.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Britain’s biggest city, our London hotels are ideally located to meet your needs and we’ll ensure that you can really unwind after a busy day.
