Located in the bustling heart of downtown Atlanta, Philips Arena is home to the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream. Since the multifunctional indoor sports complex opened its doors to replace the Omni in 1999, it has built a reputation for thrilling fans with top tier basketball events.
But excitement at Philips Arena doesn't start and stop with basketball. In fact, it hosts an exciting variety of events all year long.
International music stars and their throngs of fans make use of the facility's massive seating capacity. In fact, when the cameras are off and the teams have gone home, the venue electrifies massive audiences with talents like Cher, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Fleetwood Mac.
But after the international superstars have left and the basketball season is over, Atlanta natives know Philips Arena as one of the best spots for New Year's Eve. Every December 31st, organizers give locals and visitors alike an unforgettable show starring Widespread Panic. The Athens, Georgia-based jam band band has played consecutively for over a dozen years now, solidifying their place as a favorite.
In addition to all that musical talent, Philips Arena proudly presents a variety of annual sports and family entertainment events including Disney on Ice, the Harlem Globetrotters, Sesame Street Live, and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Visiting Philips Arena
Philips Arena is in the center of a whirlwind of daily events, and is open year round. Opening hours depend on scheduled shows.
The arena is situated next to the CNN Center at the corner of Olympic Park Drive and Marietta Street, near Centennial Olympic Park (which hosted the 1996 Olympic Games). Because of this central city location, you can use Philips Arena as a starting point for a day-long adventure into some of Atlanta's most interesting spots. If you're driving around the city, you can find parking at the CNN Center Decks, as well as the Centennial Garage.
Should you decide to take public transportation, the arena is walking distance from a MARTA station. Simply hop on a train and ride along the East/West line. Stop at the station with Philips Arena in the name. But listen closely, because the Georgia World Congress Center, CNN Center, and Georgia Dome share the station. This station is located just west of the Five Points Station, and east of Vine City.
Food is never a problem in the area. You can find several nearby restaurants to fit any budget. In the CNN Center alone variety ranges from sports bars to cocktail lounges. The World of Coca Cola Museum and the Georgia Aquarium are also within walking distance of Philips Arena, and make great additions to any day trip in the city.
