Most trips to London involve using the London Underground, and any London visitor will be hard pressed to leave the city without a stop at Victoria Station. Housing both subway, bus and rail lines, Victoria Station is a busy place, serving over 115 million passengers every year.
Victoria Station as it exists today is the natural outgrowth of the merging of two separate stations, the Brighton and the Chatam.
The western station originally housed the Brighton line to London Bridge. This portion consisted of a station building and a hotel, the Grosvenor. The eastern side was occupied by the Chatam line. With the creation of the Southern Railway in 1924, the two stations became one and renovations were undertaken to fully connect them.
There are also two connected Underground stops at Victoria Station. Built more than a century apart, they are now linked via a pedestrian path. This Underground station alone serves over 80 million passengers a year and is the second busiest station in the Underground system.
