The Baltimore Convention Center opened in 1979 as part of Mayor William Schaefer’s initiative to help Baltimore’s flagging economy, which at that point was struggling due to losses in the manufacturing industry. It quickly proved to be a huge success. Now, many organizations host conferences at the center.
The most famous convention hosted here is probably Otakon, which focuses on the popular culture of Eastern Asia (anime, manga, light novels, movies, etc.). Its name is a portmanteau of the English word convention and the Japanese word otaku.
But that’s just one of the many conventions. A few other organizations who hold conventions here are the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, Tastefully Simple, Baltimore Summer Antiques, American Association for Justice, Youngevity, and Maryland State Firemen’s Association.
With all this activity, the Convention Center is bound to produce a lot of waste. Baltimore is very conscious of this fact, so they put a system in place to try and be more environmentally friendly.
This system, SOMAT, is a waste reduction system that eliminates up to 90 percent of the waste produced in the Center, turning that refuse into usable soil product.
The Baltimore Convention Center is the first convention center to put such a system into place.
How to Get There and Where to Stay
Taking a car is probably the easiest way to get to Baltimore Convention Center, but it wouldn’t be recommended, because parking can be both difficult and expensive. Instead, taking a taxi is your best bet.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that’s close to the Convention Center, it’s hard to beat the city-owned Hilton Baltimore. This hotel is more than just close to the Center: an enclosed skywalk bridge connects the two, meaning you don’t even have to go outside if you want to walk from one to the other.

We were in College Park for my nephew's graduation and had to book rooms months in advance. The building's exterior appears old, and I was a bit concerned the interior and room would be worn. But I[More]
was pleasantly surprised. The room was modern and clean, with a very comfortable bed. Bathroom was also modern and clean. The Internet gave me some trouble. Nothing terrible, but could be better and should be looked at to improve.
My only big gripe is that the prices for the hotel seemed higher than they should be for the quality. I would say this hotel is a 2.5 sat hotel and the price seemed more for a 3 star hotel. I suppose they charge more for college graduation weekend. (I can't confirm this.) [Less]
I travel to Laurel, MD several times a year. This Holiday Inn location is perfectly located for my needs. It has only been a Holiday Inn Express for a few years, and still looks pretty fresh and new.[More]
I have now stayed there 3 times in the past year.
I did notice the flat surfaces in the rooms had been wiped down with dirty cloths that left visible streaks behind. It made the surfaces look dirtier, quite frankly.
Also, one of the rooms I stayed in (previous visit) had a pretty obvious patch on one of the walls.
My only request is for more healthy breakfast choices. I knew they'd had Chobani yogurt on my first visit, and so when I didn't see it available this past trip I asked for it. The staff was happy to go put some in the fridge. (The Light [Less]
