Located in the Newton Heath area of Manchester, the thoroughly modern Central Park Metrolink Station became operational on June 13 of 2012, even though original plans had the facility going into use in 2011.
The rail line serves the Central Park area of north-east Manchester, where a great deal of urban renewal is taking place. The station itself is part of The Gateway, a massive transportation interchange that links local bus services with Metrolink trams.
You should note that the Central Park Metrolink Station does not directly serve any bus routes but does serve several routes are nearby.
Why Delay the Opening?
The structure was there and the facilities in place, so why was there a delay in getting the Central Park Metrolink Station up and running? Oddly enough, the problems were technical glitches in the computerized management system for the trams, according to a local news article.
The delays may have caused some initial frustration by passengers eager for a more convenient location to use Metrolink tram services, but once the facility was fully functional, those old grievances became mere water beneath the bridge.
The Design and Facilities
The station is easily recognizable due to its unique and thoroughly modern design. This design involves a curved canopy composed using glass and copper. It is suspended by a cables from a steel structure.
There is an elevator at Central Park Metrolink Station as well as 18 cycling stands. Each item offers its own unique benefits to some of the people who travel via Metrolink.
Trams leave the station every 12 minutes traveling via Oldham Mumps to Rochdale Railway Station and via Victoria to East Didsbury on Mondays through Saturdays, as well as daytime hours on Sunday. Sunday evenings see a bit of a slowdown, with trams only leaving every 15 minutes.
This makes the typical service pattern five trams leaving per hour for Rochdale Railway Station and five per hour leaving for East Didsbury.
