While the Detroit Lions have had a number of rough seasons since the stadium was opened in 2002, Ford Field has certainly proven to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of catching a Lions game. Construction on the stadium began in 2000, as part of a public project designed to replace both the Pontiac Silverdome (the Lions’ former home) and Tiger Stadium, which was demolished after the Detroit Tigers baseball team relocated to Comerica Park.
Though originally designed to be an outdoor stadium, Ford Field was ultimately constructed with an indoor design that incorporates a six-story Hudson’s warehouse – now home to the majority of the field’s suites as well as lounges for club-level guests.
Despite the indoor construction, large skylights and massive windows allow plenty of natural light to reach the stadium’s FieldTurf field, which is one of only ten in the nation to have an east-west layout. Normally this format is forbidden by the NFL because direct sunlight can prove a major distraction for the players, but Ford Field was given special permission in order to accommodate inclusion of the warehouse.
Things to Do at Ford Field
While most of the field’s visitors are there primarily to see the Lions play, there are plenty of other activities available throughout the stadium. Those who work up an appetite watching the game can grab a bite at the nationally recognized Slow’s BBQ (native to Detroit), while fans looking to stretch their legs can head to the southeast corner of the stadium for a stunning view of the skyline from within Ford Field’s seven-story atrium.
Guests looking for a little pre-game action can head to the Bud Light party-zone, which boasts over 40 flat-screen televisions. Private and catered events can be held at the large but intimate North Club, with lounge-like furnishings and a 40-foot granite bar.
At regular capacity, the stadium seats 65,000, but it can be expanded to accommodate 80,000 guests for basketball games. In 2003, over 78,000 fans packed in for the Basketbowl, in what was then the largest ever crowd for a basketball game. Ford Field can also accommodate events like WrestleMania, monster truck rallies, and large concerts, with performers ranging from Bon Jovi to Taylor Swift to Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake.
Ford Field is most easily accessed by car, as it is located just south of I-75 (also known as Fisher Freeway). Its exact address is 2000 Bush Street, directly across from Comerica Park – current home of the Detroit Tigers.
