The Mohegan Sun Casino, located in Uncasville, Connecticut, is a lot more than just table games and slot machines — it's an entertainment mecca. Aside from being one of the largest casinos in the world, with some 365,000 square feet of gaming space, the property as a whole rests on 240 acres of land and includes a 12,000 seat sports arena, a cabaret theater, and about 100,000 square feet of meeting and events space. Finally, an additional 130,000 square feet is dedicated to retail shopping.
History and Property Details
The Mohegan Sun Casino was developed in cooperation with the Mohegan tribe and officially opened in 1996 to serve southern Connecticut, which attracts about 60 percent of the region's tourism. It's located right on the Thames River at 1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard. Inside, it's a visual spectacle. The ceiling is designed to model that of a planetarium, and the casino also features a 55-foot-high indoor waterfall. As far as gaming goes, the casino portion of the property offers players more than 6,500 slot machines, nearly 400 table games, and a race book. A 40-table poker room is also incorporated.
Aside from the casino, the Mohegan Sun Arena is the home venue of the Women's National Basketball Association's Connecticut Sun and also serves as a venue for a variety of other sporting and entertainment events throughout the year.
Although the casino was developed in cooperation with the Mohegan tribe, in 2000, full control was passed on to the Mohegans. Currently, the tribe is some $1.6 billion in dept as a result of the economic recession in 2007, but that is not putting a halt to expansion and updates to the property. Plans are currently underway to construct 300 to 500 new hotel rooms on the property to meet the growing demand for those who wish to "play and stay."
There are a bevy of ways to get to the casino. Located just 45 minutes from Providence, 90 minutes from Boston, and 2 hours from New York City, many out-of-town visitors drive and park in one of the 13,000 on-site parking lots. Buses also run to and from Mohegan Sun, and visitors can take Amtrak or Metro trains to the New London station, which is about 20 minutes from the casino. Another option is to travel to the casino along the Thames River on one of many different ferries.
