The Tacoma Dome is a unique wood domed indoor facility situated in Tacoma, Washington, just 30 miles south of Seattle. This was born out of an international design competition and designs were followed through by hometown architects McGranahan and Messenger Architects.
The roof of the Tacoma Dome was built from a whopping 1.6 million feet of boards and weighs an astounding 1,444,000 pounds. But what really makes this arena stand apart is its venue flexibility. A variety of seating configurations is possible due the fact that 65 percent of its seating is movable. This allows the Tacoma Dome to accommodate anywhere from 1,000 to 23,000 patrons to meet the demands of almost any event. And its highest occupancy levels makes it the largest indoor venue within the state of Washington.
The Multipurpose Tacoma Dome
This wood domed arena has played host to a myriad of sports and home teams, arts and cultural events, and private occasions. From 1994 to 1995, the arena was the primary home of the NBA Team Seattle SuperSonics, and has continued to host a variety of their home games.
It has also hosted a variety of hockey teams, including the Tacoma Rockets Western Hockey team between 1991 and 1995 and the Tacoma Sabercats between 1997 and 2002. In 1983, 1984, 1988, and 1992, the arena also housed a variety of NHL pre-season exhibition matches.
The Tacoma Dome was also used as a figure skating venue for the 1990 Goodwill Games. It was transformed into an excellent soccer facility for the MISL team the Tocama Stars from 1983 to 1992.
In more recent years, the Tacoma Dome's flexibility paired with its superior sound reverberation of 2.5 seconds has made it one of the region's premier music venues. When the arena first opened doors in 1983, it did so with a groundbreaking David Bowie concert. During the 1990s, a number of rock and roll acts sought out this premier venue, including U2, Britney Spears, Cheap Trick, and Aerosmith. More recent acts in 2013 included Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, and Taylor Swift. In 2014, the Eagles, Katy Perry, and Fleetwood Mac will also take over the Tacoma Dome to provide world-class performances to thousands of fans.
