Tulane was originally founded as a public medical college in 1834. Through the generosity of wealthy businessman Paul Tulane, the school was privatized and became a full university in 1884. It is currently home to over 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students studying in 10 schools and a variety of well respected graduate programs.
