Founded in 1877, Wimbledon Stadium is the site of the oldest tennis championship in the world. Held for two weeks in June and July, the Wimbledon tennis championship draws crowds in excess of a hundred thousand. Every day, fans flock to the famed Centre Court for marquee match-ups that may feature the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Serena Williams and many more familiar faces.
Because these championships represent the only Grand Slam tournament played on grass courts, players face a steep learning curve. The legendary ryegrass is groomed and trimmed to perfection to allow the ball to travel faster and bounce more wildly than on the hard or clay courts.
All Wimbledon players required to wear all-white outfits devoid of all sponsor logos and corporate signage, and all participants are treated with the utmost respect. On the court, players are referred to as "Mr." or "Ms." The honor of being a ball girl or boy at the championship is bestowed on local students who have been nominated for the position by their teachers.
Spectators wishing to catch a glimpse of the Royal Family should keep their eyes peeled towards the luxury boxes in the stadium. Last year, the Royal Family was at nearly every match of hometown favorite and subsequent champion Andy Murray.
Be sure to bring your appetite to Wimbledon, as every spectator is served the traditional meal of strawberries and cream.
Finding tickets for Wimbledon can be a bit of a challenge, and anyone wishing to attend the tournament should begin making preparations for the trip at least six months in advance. Fans who attend are asked to dress their best – men often sporting summer sports jackets and ties, and women decked out in sundresses. Tickets are offered through public ballot; however, a select number of tickets become available on the day of the matches. To even have a shot at snagging one of these elusive tickets, be ready to camp out the night before.
Don't feel like you have to wait until June and July to visit the famed stadium, as tours are available daily. In addition, the museum at the All England Club provides an interactive overview of the history of tennis.
