Canada's largest zoo doesn't just house an impressive 5,000 animals, the zoo also provides a day of excitement and learning through outreach and education. A Toronto attraction at the heart of the city, the Toronto Zoo sweeps visitors away from the busy city and into a tranquil habitat populated by orangutans, kangaroos, and crocodiles.
With over six miles of trails to explore, the zoo is a truly immersive experience. The Toronto Zoo has a 10-acre tundra trek that includes an area for underwater viewing, a gorilla rain forest populated by endangered species, and an exhibit replicating the extraordinary habitat of the Great Barrier Reef. The Xie Shou Giant Panda Experience introduces Er Shun and Da Mao, the zoo's resident pandas, to visitors. With seven separate geographic zones represented in the zoo, visitors can explore the entire day.
For a minimal fee, zoo patrons can reach out and interact with the animals. The private animal encounter is an outreach program offered only at the Toronto zoo. Patrons can also enjoy a camel ride, available daily.
Children can beat the summer heat on Splash Island, a one acre splash park, or get cozy with the animals in the Interactive Kids Zoo. The Waterside Theatre offers twice daily shows which allows children to interact with the zoo's birds and animals.
Endangered Animal Program
The Toronto Zoo isn't solely focused on providing visitors with education on its animals. The zoo also works to preserve those species for generations to come. The North American Gorilla Species Survival Plan is one of many programs the zoo is involved in to help transition animals bred into captivity into the wild. This year, the zoo was proud to announce the birth of a baby girl Western lowland gorilla silverback named Nneka.
The program doesn't stop at large species. The Toronto Zoo was also one of the first zoos to establish a captive-breeding program. Since 2011, that program has allowed the zoo to release over 120 endangered animals back into the wild.
