Dubbed the "cruise capital of the world", the Port of Miami, or PortMiami as it's known, is home to 13 cruise lines and hosts some 4 million cruise passengers each year. In fact, it has been recognized as the busiest cruise port in the world for the past two decades, and estimates suggest that one out of every seven cruise passengers in the world departs from PortMiami.
The port's roots date back to the early 20th century, when a hurricane blasted the area, splitting the land near so that a part of the waterway could be dredged out. This helped make way for new shipping channels and, eventually, a cruise terminal.
Construction into what is now known as the commenced in 1960. Today, in addition to being the world's busiest cruise port, PortMiami sees 7.4 million tons of cargo transported through it and almost 2,500 vessels enter it each year. Needless to say, the port is also an important part of the south economy, accounting for about $95 million in revenue each year while employing over 175,000 people.
