Located in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Edinburgh Playhouse is an intimate venue that currently hosts concerts and touring musicals. Despite its capacity of just over 3,000 seats - allowing the theater to be small enough so there is no truly bad seat - the Playhouse is actually the United Kingdom's largest active theater. Although it appears small and ordinary from the outside, the theater is deep and long on the inside.
History and Notable Events
The Edinburgh Playhouse officially opened its doors in 1929 and was modeled off of New York City's Roxy Cinema at the time of its design and construction. Located at 18-22 Greenside Place in Edinburgh's historic district, the Playhouse is owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group. Upon its inauguration, it was used as a movie super cinema and became popular as films revolutionized the entertainment industry. However, in the mid-70's, the Playhouse struggled and was actually scheduled for demolition. That was before some 15,000 people signed a petition urging to save the venue. It was at this time that the Edinburgh Playhouse transitioned to the event venue that it is today.
Some popular touring musicals that the Playhouse has hosted include Jersey Boys, Dirty Dancing, River Dance and Wicked. It also plays host to small musical acts and youth stage projects from those in the surrounding community.
Those attending a concert or show at the Edinburgh Playhouse may also have a brush with the paranormal. According to Playhouse staff members, the venue is one of the many haunted theaters in the United Kingdom. Guests and staff members have reported sightings of a man wearing gray who appears on the 6th floor of the theater. This apparition, which has become known as "Albert," is also often accompanied by a chill in the air. Albert's origin remains a mystery, but he is thought to have been a former worker or stage hand who died in the building.
There are a variety of ways to get to Edinburgh Playhouse, including by train, bus or car. A number of buses, for instance, run along Princess Street, which is located near the Playhouse. For those who wish to drive, but carpool, there are six park and ride lots located across the city.
