The Lyceum Theatre is located in London's Westminster city, and has been around in one form or another since 1765. It currently holds 2,100 seats for large musical productions, but it hasn't always been that way. Since first opening its doors to the public, it has been a circus building, a chapel, Madame Tussaud's wax museum, an opera house and, most notably, a drama theater.
Most of the existing facade is from a design constructed in 1834 by Samuel Beazley, after it was consumed by fire. In 1904, the theatre was overhauled again, and rebuilt by Bertie Crewe in a rococo style. He retained the existing facade and portico.
The Lyceum was closed for good, and almost demolished in 1939. However, it was saved in 1951 for use as a ballroom. Finally, it was restored to a drama theater in 1996.While the theater was still outfitted as a large ballroom in the 1960's and 70's, it played a vital part in London's popular music scene. Legendary bands graced the stage here, including The Grateful Dead, The Clash, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, and U2.
Since that final restoration in the 90's, the theater has hosted big-budget musicals and plays. In fact, Disney's The Lion King musical has been showing there consistently since 1999.
