If you purchase a ticket to a sporting or entertainment event in Manchester, England, chances are that you'll be heading to Manchester Arena for the event. The 21,000-seat stadium, which is officially called "Phones 4u Arena Manchester" after its sponsorship partner, hosts a bevy of events year in and year out -- from concerts and boxing matches to wrestling matches and an annual Jehovah 's Witness convention.
Manchester Arena officially opened in July of 1995, constructed for a cost of 52 million pounds. But the arena wasn't intended to be the home venue of a professional or amateur sports team.
The main purpose behind its construction was an effort for Manchester to become the host city of either the 1996 or 2000 Olympic Summer Games, an effort it eventually lost to Atlanta, Georgia (U.S.A.) and Sydney, Australia, respectively.
Today, the arena serves as a multi-purpose venue. And while various sporting events take place in the arena throughout the year, Manchester Arena is perhaps best known for its concerts, as its 21,000 person capacity makes it an intimate enough venue without it seeming "too" big for both fans and performers.
In fact, the arena regularly ranks among the world's best in terms of annual ticket sales. Pop star Kylie Minogue leads the list of all-time music performers at the arena -- she performed for the 30th time at the facility last September, marking a total of about 400,000 fans she's entertained at Manchester Arena alone.
Aside from concerts and shows, the arena has also once served as the home venue for the Manchester Giants, a pro basketball team, and the local Phoenix and Storm pro hockey teams. Today, it regularly hosts events such as UFC fights, boxing matches, swimming events, monster truck races, and TNA and WWE wrestling events.
