The O2 Arena is the premiere stadium in England for concerts and performances and was used during the 2012 London Summer Olympics. 02 Arena is tied for the honor of being the busiest arena in the world, with 1.9 million ticket sales for concerts and shows in 2011.
Named after the telecommunications giant O2, the venue is also referred to as the North Greenwich Arena because of its location on the Greenwich Peninsula in London. In addition to the Olympics and Paralympics, the O2 Arena has hosted sporting events like the ATP World Tour Finals and the Euro league Final Four.
When not hosting a sporting event, comedy show or musical performance, the O2 Arena is a bustling venue with an 11-screen multiplex cinema and an entire street devoted to great restaurants and exciting nightlife.
Visiting the O2 Arena
The O2 Arena is easily accessible by taking the Tube's Jubilee Line to North Greenwich. Additionally, there are several bus lines that make stops near the arena. Due to heavy traffic and limited parking, driving to the O2 Arena is not encouraged; however, there is parking for up to 2,200 cars. In order to secure a parking spot, it is best to reserve a parking pass in advance of the event. If traveling by bus or the Tube is not an option, many people opt to take a taxi to the arena. Because the performances at the venue often continue into the early morning hours, many spectators opt to stay at one of the numerous hotels near the O2 Arena.
On event days, the doors of the O2 Arena open at 9 a.m. and remain open into the wee hours of the morning. On nonevent days, the Arena opens at noon and stays open until about 7 p.m.
To get the full experience of the venue and the area, concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early and explore the neighborhood. Like everywhere else in London, the area near the O2 arena is surrounded by history. Nearby historical landmarks include the Trinity Buoy Wharf, National Maritime Museum, and Skyscape.
