From its soaring modern skyline to its lush gardens and palaces, Shanghai has long been a place of fascinating intersections. Both a historic epicenter of global trade and a city bisected into two distinct cores by the Huangpu River, our wide range of Shanghai hotels will help you experience these pleasing contradictions firsthand.
Get to know Shanghai’s dramatic skyline from the vertiginous observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Center’s 100th floor. From there, hit the Riverside Promenade in the Bund District to begin to get a feel for the city and its lively mix of old and new. Here, the original trading houses and consulates of European nations line the riverfront. Located within the old walled city, the City God Temple is a large complex of roofs eaved in traditional Chinese style, with serene tea houses and pavilions that help you forget you are in one of the world’s largest cities. From there, stroll to the nearby Yuyuan Garden, a 16th century monument to tranquility that boasts the Exquisite Jade Rock, an impressive boulder that is rumored to have been salvaged from a shipwrecked shipment bound for the Chinese emperor.
Cross the river to Pudong, Shanghai’s center of modernity, and crane your neck to view the Oriental Pearl Tower, a true symbol of the city. Many are drawn by the pull of Nanjing Road’s buzzing neon streets, and you’ll see why once you witness the spectacle of boutiques, scrumptious traditional dining, and people watching for yourself. The Yuyuan Bazaar offers more traditional Chinese shopping opportunities, and an ideal spot to try some piping hot dumplings. Learn more about the past and current history of the city while indulging in a glitzy night out at the one-of-a-kind Shanghai Circus World. During this spectacular show, scenes of Chinese history are brought to life through a mix of dance, acrobatics, and martial arts synchronized with a music and light show.
