Oxford, known as the “city of dreaming spires,” is situated in southern central England a stone’s throw from London proper. The home of England’s oldest university, not to mention the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is replete with a treasure trove of scholarship, monumental buildings and ecclesiastical history.
The twin towers of Christ Church Cathedral and Tom Tower dominate the skyline, and certainly earn their “dreamy” title. Each Oxford College has its own distinct style, and all are beautifully designed to showcase the halls of learning. Oxford’s Bodleian Library is ancient and stocked with layers of priceless manuscripts - definitely worth a visit. Other significant buildings include the elegant Radcliffe Camera, the Hertford Bridge (or Bridge of Sighs), and the Carfax Tower, where you can take in panoramic views of the entire city center.
Originally completed in 1683, the Ashmolean Museum is the oldest museum housed by a university, and its vast collection of intriguing art and antiquities remains open to this day. Plant lovers won’t want to miss the Oxford Botanic Garden, which was founded in the 17th century and features extremely diverse flora despite its compact size. Although it is primarily used for University events, the exquisite Sheldonian Theatre designed by Christopher Wren is always open to visitors. Punting on the Thames and Cherwell Rivers is also a popular pastime on sunny days.
Enjoy the quaint storefronts of Oxford’s High Street as you spend a day out on the town. The Covered Market is a great destination for an eclectic mix of food and apparel, while Cornmarket and Queen Streets also offer a range of shopping and dining. Historic Blackwell’s Bookshop lays claim to being the largest room devoted entirely to book sales in all of Europe - to verify this, you may have to visit yourself.

Overall it was a pleasant stay but unfortunately let down by a couple of things. Upon being seated at breakfast we were asked what drinks we woukd like, I asked for a hot chocolate but was told quite[More]
abruptly that they didnt do hot chocolate. This came as a surprise due to previously at holidays inns this had never been a issue. We felt the member of staff we asked didnt want to walk to the bar/kitchen to do it. I then asked another member of staff who without hesitation made me one. At a later point during breakfast I saw the same member of staff who said there wasnt any take a order for another table of a hot chocolate and bringing it to them herself. It is more the attitude of the member of staff that I was not pleased with even if she would of said that she is very busy and it may take ten mintues then that would not have been a problem. Also my partner found that the ladies changing rooms had a awful smell of urine and also no single occupency changing rooms which resulted in her getting changed back in the room due to 1. The smell and 2. Lack of privacy. Breakfast was lovely as usual and the room was spot on and the kitkat was a appreciated touch. [Less]
