With a downtown perched on the peninsula between two rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, Charleston, SC, makes for a fascinating and rewarding destination for business and leisure travellers alike. As home to America's first museum and countless historical landmarks as well as the country's longest cable-stay bridge and some of the best-loved seafood on the east coast, Charleston has many faces to discover during your stay.
Head out of your Charleston hotel and get your bearings by hopping in a horse-drawn carriage and taking in a tour of the peninsula. Or, take matters into your own hands and explore the city on foot. As you wander through the city's colonial houses, quaint mansions, cobblestone streets and beautiful gardens, you'd be forgiven for getting lost in another time.
If a trip back in time isn't enough to satisfy you need for adventure, take a dive into another world at the magnificent South Carolina Aquarium, where you’ll meet sharks, moray eels, river otters and more. When all that nature gives you a taste for the great outdoors, the 350,000 acres of the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge will satisfy even the most eager explorer. Alternatively, combine a day out of the city with a closer look at Charleston's plantation past. The Magnolia Plantation offers educational tours of its house and a boat trip around the grounds.

We stayed at the Downtown Ashley River Holiday Inn while visiting Charlestown. It was a great place to stay as it started our days with a great breakfast offering and provided a clean, quiet room for[More]
our evenings and sleeping. We appreciated and made use of the refrigerator and microwave in the room. All staff were extremely courteous and responsive to our needs.
We felt that the cost was reasonable and the Inn met our needs while visiting Charleston.
The only negatives were minor - the room coffee maker needed to be moved (the floor was the best option) to plug it in, the TV was small for the room size, the room lighting (lamps) was poor, and more functional, comfortable chairs would have been appreciated.
Also, the trolley availability and ease of use was not as we expected, so we ended up driving into the downtown areas instead of using it. We also thought we would have greater walking access to downtown, but the surrounding highways deterred us.
Overall, we were very pleased with the value we received. If you have a car available and wish your hotel to be a base (rather than a spa-like destination) for your visit, then this is an excellent choice! [Less]
