No problem on arrival, staff were fine and I checked in ok.
The power was out on all the sockets in my room - So I was unable to watch TV or make myself a hot drink. I reported the fault, and to be fair they put a maintenance guy on it. I went out for dinner, and the fault was fixed on my return.
The worst thing was the Fire alarm. It was faulty and went off 3 times during the night, and during the "evacuation" the first time it happened I spoke to a guy who had been there a week and said it had happened several times.
I had a completely ruined night sleep, and there wasn't a single acknowledgement, let alone an apology, from the staff either at the time or during breakfast or checkout - completely terrible customer service, they'd obviously just got used to it happening night after night and brushed it off.

A clean and comfortable hotel with friendly staff. Breakfast is of the standard Holiday inn express norm. Supporting evening meal restaurants are of a pretty reasonable standard. Overall more than happy with my stay.

My visit to this hotel was a mixed experience, the staff are remote and automated, They fail to engage the guest with the exception of an older receptionist who was pleasant, The first room had a faulty TV, which meant I had to go all the way down and get another key for another room. Not what you want after a busy day travelling. The parking is OK but extremely limited, they share Matalans car park until 9am you would then have to pay and display. The hotel is crammed into the town centre near the bus station with very tight roads and no facilities near by. A car drive takes you to the Complex on Six Hills Way which has many options for food and drink.
Summing up. Clean room, good shower, remote staff. Poor position for hotel.

I arrived at this hotel to find that I did not have a booking. When the receptionist searched further, she found that my booking, made by internet approx 10 days before on a pre-paid no cancellation basis, had mysteriously been cancelled at midnight on the Saturday prior to my stay!! There was no explanation for this, and I was told 'you are lucky we have a bedroom available' - my thoughts were 'no, YOU are lucky you have a bedroom available!'
I have previously enjoyed happy stays in 'express by holiday inn' hotels so am hoping this was a one-off!

I was informed that I had booked a smoking room - I hadn't ! And the receptionist only believed me when I showed him the booking acknowledgement I had received by email
The only non smoking room available was for twin bed (I had booked a double) and this room was for wheelchair access
The TV failed to work and there was no hot water when I wanted a shower in the morning - also you had to pump the toilet handle to get it to flush
No apology given - I was told that I must be unlucky
Stevenage HI Express - never again

Quick and easy check in, for the first time ever priority club membership was acknowedged, and bottled water and free late checkout offered. Room was exceptionally clean and comfortable, even with sofabed in use. Small problem with the room (bedding not available for sofabed) was quickly and politely sorted out by helpful staff. Great breakfast, no hassle, sit as long as you want, staff quick to top up as food was used, even though the hotel was apparently busy. Terrific bargain on advance saver deal. Have stayed her a couple of times before, will definitely do so again.
