Der perfekte Tag

Vormittags

As the sun rises over Fort Point Channel and casts its first few rays along the InterContinental Boston hotel on the waterfront, Boston begins to wake. This time of day presents the perfect moment in the day to explore Boston Harbor through the famed Boston Harborwalk. This network of trails and walk ways are key for morning runners to jump start their day and are vital for visitors looking for a route almost off the beaten path. Start your trip on the Harborwalk at Flour Bakery, where you can enjoy a muffin still warm from the over and an over-sized mug of café au lait. If coffee is your forte, head across Congress Street to Barrington Coffee Co. Their passion is to discover the finest and most exciting coffees from around the world each season. Follow the Harborwalk to Long Wharf and pop in to the New England Aquarium to make friends with their world famous penguins and gaze upon their iconic Giant Ocean Tank, located in the heart of the aquarium. After, test out your sea legs and hop the Charlestown Navy Yard ferry to visit The USS Constitution. The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. She became known as Old Ironsides during the War of 1812 when she fought the British Frigate HMS Guerriere and cannonballs fired at her merely bounced off as if she were made of iron.

Nachmittags

Now that your sea legs have been stabilized in the Boston Harbor Waters, set sail for an afternoon on the Boston Harbor Islands by ferry from Long Wharf. The ferry system provides a quick and easy round trip adventure to the outer lying islands such as George’s Island and Spectacle Island. Gaze upon the awe inspiring view of the Boston Skyline upon your return. There is no other view just like it! Once out at the islands explore the Civil War-era fort, visit the historic lighthouses, hike and camp, or picnic and fish.

Abends

As the sun sets in the East, nights in Boston heat up. A city that is enriched with sporting events, arts, and culture, the Boston nightlife choices are endless. With over 170 arts organizations for theater, music, dance, comedy, and family programs through Greater Boston there are options for different tastes. Boston’s iconic Theater District plays home to many famous playhouses that have housed huge Broadway hits. Boston has to be nicknamed Title Town because championships don’t lie. With all the richness and charm of a living museum, there is no better ballpark to visit than Fenway Park. Is there a better rivalry in sports than the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees? TD Garden defines home for the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins right outside of the North End of Boston for our basketball and hockey fans. Want to catch a New England Patriots game? Gillette Stadium is a short drive away or head to South Station and hop the train that takes you to the stadium during football season only. Boston is known for great teams, great players, great stadiums, passionate fans and a legacy for winning against all odds.

  • John Hancock Weather Beacon

The weather beacon at the top of the Berkeley Building (old John Hancock Building) has a rhyme to help decipher the colors: steady blue, clear view; flashing blue, clouds due; steady red, rain ahead; flashing red, snow. But during baseball season, flashing red means that a Red Sox home game was called off because of the weather.

  • Massachusetts State House

Signs on approaching highways indicating the distance to Boston aren't measuring the miles to the city limits but to the State House dome. The dome is gilded in 23.5kt gold leaf.

  • Molasses flood of 1919

A storage tank exploded in the North End on January 15, 1919, sending pieces of metal and a 2.3-million-gallon wave of molasses crashing through the streets, destroying homes and buildings and killing 21 people. Some Bostonians claim that on a hot day you can still smell the molasses.

  • Oliver R Smoot

The Smoot is a non-standard unit of length used to measure only one item in Boston, the Harvard Bridge on Massachusetts Avenue connecting Boston and Cambridge. Fraternity pledge Oliver Smoot was rolled head over heels across the bridge to measure 364.4 Smoots (his height, 5ft 7in) plus one ear.
