Rated 4,0 out of 5,0 by Beautiful decor, inept staff This hotel is beautiful and very large, with numerous amenities. The decor is excellent and tasteful, harkening to a Spanish galleon theme and complete with tremendous life-size galleon suspended above the hotel. With multiple restaurants and bars and spacious living quarters at affordable rates, there is scant reason for guests not to stay. However, the staff is likely to need additional training in view of the following three examples. First, upon checking in, I was told that because I was an IHG member, I could help myself to the room's minibar including all beverages and beers. I drank one 10 oz. bottle of orange juice from the minibar during the stay and was surprised to see that I was charged 40 RMB for the orange juice (about $6.50). Since it was a large sum of money, I casually and politely informed the check out employee that I was told that it was complimentary. He didn't respond. I then assumed that he maybe didn't speak English, but he proceeded to process the remainder of my checkout (including exchanging cash) in English. So I then politely requested that he waive the charge, and he ignored me again. Since it was only a few bucks, I quietly paid the $6.50. Nothing worth raising a fuss over. Second, when I sat down for breakfast after I checked out, I was asked for my room number from waitresses on at least three separate occasions. A first occasion to ask my room number. No prob here; this is normal. A second occasion to notify me that my room is ineligible for free breakfast while I was eating. I thanked the waitress for informing me, and I asked her to bring me a check directly, but I thought to myself that bringing a check should be the default action when the room is ineligible for a free breakfast. Not a big deal. A third occasion to ask me, in an almost accusational tone, that the room number I gave to them was not occupied. (Were they accusing me of giving a fake room number?) Of course, I replied, I just checked out. (Shouldn't they be able to see that?) Furthermore, I thought to myself, even if I gave a fake room number, I asked them to bring me the check, so I would pay for the breakfast anyway. Not a huge deal, but the whole situation made me feel like the waitresses were accusing me of trying to get a free breakfast. For real? Third, when I fetched my bags, I asked a bag check employee for the Chinese name of a local bus port, so that I could communicate this to a cab driver. The guy gave me a Chinese name, and I asked him (because I'd earlier reference multiple ports on Google Maps) if that was the only one. He said, of course it's the only one. I then told him that I was looking for a port with buses, and he said it's the only one with buses. So I hop into a cab, tell the cabbie the port name given to me, and end up at the wrong port. 50 RMB and a 40-minute detour later, I end up at the correct port ... another port with buses, lo and behold! In sum, pretty hotel with some really inept employees. 21. November 2014
