Comfortable Clothing

Austin is a very casual city. Please make sure to bring comfortable shoes and light clothing for layering, as it is hot and humid in the summer and chilly in the winter.


Tipping

A tip of 15 to 20 percent is a customary gratuity for good service in a restaurant or bar.

Live Music Capital of the World

Austin is known as the 'Live Music Capital of the World.' Famous artists such as Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan have called Austin home. There are daily live music performances at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport.


The bats

Austin houses the largest number of Mexican fruit bats in North America. Each summer, thousands of people gather at the Congress Avenue Bridge to watch the bats take flight for feeding, minutes before sundown.


University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin is one of North America's largest universities. Famous students have included Matthew McConaughey, Janis Joplin, Laura Bush, and Walter Cronkite.

Bathing suit

Austin boasts many natural swimming holes, and on a hot day, nothing can be better than cooling off in one. Don't forget to pack your bathing suit, sun lotion and a hat.


Casual attire

When packing your clothes, please keep in mind that Austin is a very casually attired city.
