LOCAL ESSENTIALS

THE PERFECT DAY

MORNING

Summertime is a wonderful time of the year to take advantage of Cleveland's West Side Market. The market is one of the country's largest, with over 100 merchants and traders. It's been going since 1840. This is a wonderful place to find specialty foods and fresh organic produce of every description. You can even treat yourself to homemade Perogies - a Ukrainian cheese and potato pasty, or a hot Italian sausage sandwich for lunch. After experiencing the aromas of the market take a stroll around Ohio City, the neighborhood surrounding downtown Cleveland. It is home to Cleveland's oldest church, and you can discover many antique and specialty shops there. Alternatively take a 'Lolly the Trolley' sightseeing tour downtown through the Flats and the Warehouse District.

AFTERNOON

Cleveland Rocks! Escape the afternoon heat by taking a walk through history...rock 'n' roll history! Cleveland is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's right on Lake Erie. You can see Janis Joplin's Porsche and James Brown's tux. If you're more inclined toward the sciences, there's the Great Lakes Science Center nearby or the NASA John Glenn Research Center.

EVENING

Cleveland is the home of the Cleveland Indians. You should spend at least one evening in your life watching a baseball game out at Jacobs Field. Catch an early home game and try to bring home a game ball! After the game walk right over to the historical Warehouse District where you have the pick of Cleveland's best restaurants and bars.

History

Founded by Moses Cleaveland in 1796, the City of Cleveland grew up at the confluence of canals and railroad routes. It has impressive turn of the century architecture, lake fronted parks and gardens. The Warehouse District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The first to settle

The first man to settle in Cleveland was Lorenzo Carter who built his house on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. This was after Moses Cleaveland, who established the settlement, oversaw the plan for the modern downtown area.

Weather

Summer or winter, the weather in Cleveland is always moderated by a breeze from Lake Erie.

When Cleaveland became Cleveland

When Cleveland was founded in 1796 the original name for the city was spelled Cleaveland. It changed when the local newspaper had to shorten its masthead by one letter, so they left out the 'a'.
