ART

The Cleveland Museum of Art, founded in1913, holds one of the best collections in America. It is the only major museum in the country which is free.

This is one of the few areas in Cleveland that is known for its art, dance, and musical culture. During your stay you should try to see at the minimum: the Botanical Gardens, the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Historical Society.

Apart from concerts, performances and visiting exhibitions the city hosts more than 100 festivals each year. These range from wine festivals to celebrating Greek or Italian culture and a festival for 'twins'.


History

Founded by Moses Cleaveland in 1796, the City of Cleveland grew up at the confluence of canals and railroad routes. It has impressive turn of the century architecture, lake fronted parks and gardens. The Warehouse District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.


The first to settle

The first man to settle in Cleveland was Lorenzo Carter who built his house on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. This was after Moses Cleaveland, who established the settlement, oversaw the plan for the modern downtown area.


Weather

Summer or winter, the weather in Cleveland is always moderated by a breeze from Lake Erie.


When Cleaveland became Cleveland

When Cleveland was founded in 1796 the original name for the city was spelled Cleaveland. It changed when the local newspaper had to shorten its masthead by one letter, so they left out the 'a'.

June, apart from being our hottest month, can also be our wettest. A waterproof coat is well worth packing.


Temperature

Appropriate clothing depends on the time you are visiting as our climate varies enormously. Summer temperatures, from June to September, are usually around 78° F in the daytime and around 58° F at night. In winter, daytime averages are about 35° F and 20 °F at night. June, apart from being our hottest month, can also be our wettest.


Tipping

Tipping is usually expected and greatly appreciated. The usual amount is 15% - 20% in a bar or restaurant. In hotels $1 a bag is the normal tip.
