LOCAL CULTURE
Bargain
While visiting the souqs in Qatar always bargain with the shopkeepers which is part of the tradition. Always offer a much lower price to the original offer and slowly work upwards until you feel the price is right.
ETIQUETTE
Do not sit in a way that shows the soles of your feet or shoes to your Qatari hosts as this is considered impolite and do please dress modestly when out in public as a show of respect towards the culture and tradition of Qatar.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Do ask permission from people before you take their photograph. Many older people and most women object to being photographed. Equally, do not take pictures of government buildings, the police or armed forces.
Taxi
Public taxis known as Karwa can be hailed from the side of the road. They are a great and very reasonably priced way of getting around. Please note that many people and taxi drivers still navigate by landmarks rather than street addresses.
Weather in Qatar
At temperatures reaching over 40ÂșC you need to drink plenty of water and don't forget to use a high-factor sunblock on all exposed skin.
DID YOU KNOW ?
Dhows
The traditional wooden boats or dhows of the Arabian Sea can be seen along Doha Corniche, in the harbours of Al Wakra and Al Khor. The word 'dhow' is derived from the Swahili word 'dau', meaning fishing boat.
Doha Corniche
The picturesque Doha Corniche is flanked by the calm waters of the bay, their colours changing by the hour, varying from turquoise to emerald to cobalt blue.
Exchange rate
The Qatari Riyal is pegged to the United States Dollar - fluctuation is not common, however we recommend checking exchange rates prior to travel.
Importation of Alcohol
The importation of Alcohol is strictly not permitted - even in the format of Duty Free purchased in other airports or on in-bound flights.
Pearl trade
The pearl trade was once the mainstay of the Qatari economy.
