AFTERNOONTake a trip to the beach village of Zihuatanejo and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk. If you are lucky you will still find fishermen selling their catch of the day to restaurant buyers. Then have lunch at La Sirena Gorda ('the fat mermaid' in Spanish). This is where the seafood taco originated. Afterwards drop into the Museo de Arqueologia de la Costa Grande to see its collection of ancient pottery and art. |
EVENINGJust before sunset, climb up to the Villa de la Selva restaurant, the former summer home of one of Mexico's presidents. This restaurant has a spectacular cliff-side location and is the best place to watch the sunset while you're enjoying a cocktail (try a margarita or martini, as these are especially well made). The view, the air and the whole atmosphere is one of romance and pleasure. Dine, drink and feast your eyes on a view you will never tire of. |
LOCAL CULTUREDomingos Culturales.Domingos Culturales is every Sunday at 6pm. This is a cultural event that takes place at Juan N Alvarez Street in downtown Zihuatanejo, featuring shows and local food vendors. Feast Day Of The Patron Saint Of MexicoIf you're here on December 12, on the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, you will see processions down the street with children dressed in traditional clothes and locals holding candles and singing litanies. PozoleTraditionally in Guerrero, the local population eats pozole - hominy grits and shredded pork or chicken in a broth accompanied by a side dish of avocado, pork rinds and cheese bits. It is customary to drink a caballito (shot) of mezcal with this meal. ReligionThe principal religion in Mexico is Roman Catholicism. The most revered saint is the Virgin of Guadalupe, whose feast day is the 12 December. TequilaMexicans usually drink tequila with salt and lemon, but you can also try it served with lemon and sangrita. This is known as 'Bandera', which means flag in Spanish, as the colors of the ingredients represent the colors of the Mexican flag. |
DID YOU KNOW ?Ixtapa / Rocky islandsIxtapa, a Nahuatl Indian word meaning 'the white place', has a wide bay with small rocky islands solely inhabited by sea birds and is only considered white because of the guano stains on the rocks. La Soledad de MacielThis fascinating village, better known as La Chole, is located 20 kilometers south of Ixtapa and has been studied by archaeologists from Mexico's National Institute of Archaeology and History. Here you can see an ancient stone carved with petroglyphs. Museo Arqueologico de la Costa GrandeThis permanent display showcases pre-Hispanic items from 54 archaeological sites discovered in the area surrounding Zihuatanejo. SurfingOur area is a fantastic surfing destination. The coastline of Troncones is a world-famous surfer's paradise, and La Saladita, Playa Majahua and Playa Manzanillo are also popular surf spots nearby. ZihuatanejoZihuatanejo is the principal administrative city for the region and is about 5 km away from the Ixtapa resort. The word 'Zihuatanejo' comes from the Nahuatl language and means 'the place of the dark women', in reference to the fact that the pre-colonial society of the region was matriarchal. |
