LOCAL
RECOMMENDATIONS

THE PERFECT DAY

MORNING

Start your day with a workout in our Tecnho-Gym overlooking the airport runway. Take comfort as the international airlines arrive in Johannesburg knowing that this ideal location gives you extra time to prepare for your day, return journey home or onward safari transfer without the headaches of traffic congestion and missed or delayed flights.Enjoy a fresh Continental breakfast from Quills Restaurant, open 24 hours per day. Al fresco dining is available on the terrace where you can soak up the early morning rays of the African sun. The best way to explore any city is on foot. Enjoy a walking tour of inner city Johannesburg where you will get a chance to learn about Johannesburg and South Africa’s history. Stop off at the Carlton Centre’s also known as the “Top of Africa” which offers an exhilarating view of the skyline.

AFTERNOON

Take a visit to Constitution Hill where you will get an understanding of the shaping of our society. The Constitutional Court complex is built on the ruins of one of the most notorious prisons which was built in 1892. Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela both spent time on this prison. Steeped in history, Constitution Hill will stir something in your soul. Head to Moyo Zoo lake for lunch. Moyo is an outdoor restaurant serving delicious Pan-African cuisine accompanied by an African jazz band.

EVENING

Enjoy a relaxing massage at Camelot Spa located on the 8th floor of the hotel before heading down for sundowners on Quills Terrace. Quills offers a great upmarket dining experience specialising in South African game and seafood dishes. Our wine list offers some of the best wines to be found in the country and is not to be missed. Concierge shall be delighted to assist with entertainment options in and around Johannesburg. There really is a lot on offer from township shebeens to luxury award winning restaurants and theatre. Unmistakably African in style and taste.

INSIDER TIPS

LOCAL CULTURE

Taxis

Taxis and private transport, metered or otherwise, is relatively expensive and not in abundance. We do not recommend the informal taxi services found in use by the local communities due to their poor safety records.

Tipping

Tip around 10 to 20 % depending on the quality of service. Tipping patterns are similar to the USA or Europe.

Dress

Summer - light and loose clothing and comfortable cottons. Allow for daily downpours between October and April. Winter - it is generally warm during the day and cold from late afternoon. Temperatures range from 24C down to 4C so both warm and cool clothing required. Informal dress is very common, even in business however suits will signify the importance of a meeting or deal dependant on company culture and circumstance.

Vaccinations

South Africa requires all travellers journeying from yellow fever risk countries to show proof of yellow fever vaccination by means of a valid yellow fever certificate. Johannesburg is malaria free so no precautions are necessary when visiting.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Johannesburg

Johannesburg is a sprawling city, bigger that London and New York and is 1753 metres (5750 feet) above sea level. It is also considered the world's biggest man-made forest with over 10 million trees. Take time out to explore the culture, vibrance and history of one of the worlds youngest key cities.

WHAT TO PACK

Jo'burg Bound!

Winter is opposite to Northern Hemisphere seasons - May through August. In Johannesburg it does not rain so pack moisturisers and lip balms - men and ladies! The sun will still burn during the day so don't forget sun cream. At night it can drop below freezing but is normally between 4 and 8 celsius. Expect sub-tropical and balmy weather in Durban and cold wet and windy weather in Cape Town. Summer is hot and humid in Durban, warm with daily thundershowers in Johannesburg. In Cape Town you can expect the same but it can on occassions be cold, wet and windy.

Golf

Pack your golf clubs! South Africa offers an abundance of excellent golf courses. In comparison with Europe most clubs offer excellent value green fees.

Mobile phone reception

South Africa's mobile phone operators utilise the GSM system. If your phone is GSM compatible, set up international roaming with your service provider before you leave home. Alternatively, you can hire a mobile phone at the airport on arrival in South Africa, and purchase pre-paid airtime at retail outlets during your stay.
