RECOMMENDATIONS
MORNINGEverybody knows the Empire State Building. For a different view, start the day with a visit to Rockefeller Center. Go to theTop of the Rock observation deck, an Art Deco masterpiece filling floors 67 to 70. The unobstructed 360 degree view through the crystal clear glass is astonishing, with the cityscape stretching for miles in every direction. Find your way up to the second deck. Here it is just you surrounded by a beautiful Art Decco wall totally unobstructed. It leaves you awestruck at how beautiful New York really is. You'll need an hour up here at least. Come back to earth with a walk down 5th Avenue past icons like Saks and Tiffany to Central Park. For a complete change of pace, rent a bike near at 72 street near the Boathouse to give you time to really explore. |
AFTERNOONThe Four Seasons restaurant - not to be confused with the hotel - is another New York landmark. Its Pool Room is said to be the most beautiful place in any NY restaurant. Walk down 'Picasso Alley' between the Pool Room and the Grill Room and see something many locals miss - the monumental Picasso on the wall. It should give you a taste for a stroll along 53rd St between 5th and 6th Avenue to New York's newest landmark - the stunning, recently renovated Museum of Modern Art. Take in an exhibition or spend the afternoon meditating on the work of a favorite artist. Try a glass of fine wine and sample the exceptional desserts in The Terrace 5 Cafe overlooking the Sculpture Garden before you leave. |
EVENINGHead to Broadway and see how a show is really done on the 'Great White Way'. We can arrange tickets - even to the sold-out shows. Afterwards take a cab down to the Meatpacking district for some super-chic dining at Morimoto. Rub shoulders with the famous while sampling the latest delicacies from Japan's 'Iron Chef'. New York does a cocktail better than anywhere in the world. Have yours in Gansevoort's rooftop lounge before dancing the night away in the district's top clubs. Watch the sunrise at the Cafeteria Restaurant over coffee and scrambled eggs. |
LOCAL CULTUREASK A NEW YORKERContrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are friendly and helpful. We may seem abrupt at times as the city is incredibly fast-paced, but please feel free to approach the locals for assistance. Don't mistake urgency for anxiety. EATING OUTAs a rule, New Yorkers rarely eat at home. As a consequence, many trendy and famous restaurants are often booked a month in advance. Last minute trip? Although you may not get into your top pick, there are thousands of New York hot spots that are not as main stream which means, reservations are not an issue. GETTING AROUNDNew York City Taxis cannot be reserved in advance. They must be hailed. Always use yellow taxis unless reserved in advance. New York CIty also has a very efficient metro system that can take you anywhere and everywhere. TO TIP OR NOT TO TIPNew York is a tipping city. It is customary to tip all service providers. Not tipping indicates you received poor service. WHAT TO WEARNew York weather, like the city itself, can be extreme and temperamental. It's not uncommon to be sweltering one day and need a coat and sweater the next. Always check the forecast before travelling to the city. |
DID YOU KNOW ?Cool HarlemThe affluent used to have summer homes in Harlem because it was cooler than being in the heart of the city. Harlem boasts several beautiful buildings, not the least of which is a genuine Georgian Mansion. Staten Island FerryIt costs the City of New York more money to charge a fee for the Staten Island Ferry, than to offer it for free. The Frick CollectionThe Frick Collection, which hosts a stunning array of Renaissance art and Old Masters, is actually a preserved 'Guilded Age' 5th Avenue mansion. The VanderbiltsInterContinental NY Barclay resides on the location of the old Vanderbilt Mansion. The 'special' entrances to the Grand Central trains were actually the Vanderbilts' private train platforms. |
WHAT TO PACKComfortable ShoesAlways bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes: New York is a walking city. Jackets Are RequiredAlthough New York is fairly casual, some restaurants will maintain a dress code. Gentlemen would be advised to bring a jacket. Ties are optional. ShoppingNew York is the shopping capital of the world. Bring a spare tote or collapsible piece of luggage to take home your treasures. |
