New York Barclay

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 543 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Classic New York We have just spent three wonderful nights at the Intercontinental Barclay. One couldn't ask for a better location. Our room was spacious, quiet and comfortable. Sure it shows a bit of wear around the edges but the hotel exudes class and comfort. I'll be back. 20 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 It's just ok For the kind of trip we had to New York, family fun Fun and sightseeing, this was not the right property Reception was ok, housekeeping ok, bar service ok, If your thinking of having breakfast in the hotel Don't!!!!!! $45 each all the normal (not business) Customers were talking about this So in summary comfortable bed/room and foyer But dated and expensive 20 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Barclay Staff Excell at Hospitality The Barclay has been my home base in NYC for years. The friendly staff make it easy to recommend this property to anyone looking for a place to stay in midtown Manhattan. 19 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good location This is a nice and safe place, close to time square and the metro station. Rooms needs more care regarding what is working and what needs to be fixed. The mini-fridge had old rotten eggs that smelled really bad and was not checked nor cleaned from previous guests. The items in the fridge were not checked before we cam in and I had to ask the staff to be sure to have all items accounted for from the previous guest so I would not be charged for things items I did not consume. Parking is overpriced. The rooms were quite. The survey asked for swimming pool but the facility does not have a pool. Room keys did not work on the 3rd night and we had to go down and reset them for some reason even though I asked the staff on check-in to be sure this would not happen. They were automatically deactivated due to a second reservation. 19 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stay Although we heard the hotel was about to close, the management and team members were all on it for our stay. Can't wait to see what you will do to the place! 18 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor experience Treated very poorly by front desk and bounced around to 3 different rooms. Restaurant was expensive and the food uninspiring. The walls were thin so I could clearly hear my neighbors the entire night. The bell hop maid service and door staff was the only bright spot to a dismal visit. 18 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Low Key Elegance The fact that the Barclay doesn't front a major thoroughfare (hence reduced traffic noise) indicates to me the statement that they want to make about their hotel. I found everything about the Barclay classy and comfortable but not nearly as gaudy or trendy as some of its neighbors. Understated elegance is a good description. The staff was always polite and helpful and never made me feel uncomfortable despite the decidedly non-business nature of my stay. The hotel's historical architecture limiting the size of the bathroom was one of my few criticisms. And with so many tall buildings nearby, a room with a view is nearly impossible. But the key factors, comfortable bed, excellent temperature control, good water pressure in the shower, and good internet make the Barclay a reliable choice for midtown East. 18 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful Art Deco Hotel We booked the stay as a Celebration for my 50th Birthday, it was every thing and more than we could have wished for, the whole week was perfect. The Staff were wonderful, very helpful and courteous. The room was lovely, and although we did not have a view it did not mar the rest of the room, we had loads of space, and plenty of storage for all of our belongings. The location was perfect, only a stones through from 5th Avenue and The Rockeffeler Centre, Time Square and about 20 mins walk from the Hop on Hop off bus service. Infact everything was within walking distance. We couldn't have asked for a better Hotel to spend a very special week. 17 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not up to Intercontinental standards Being a regular and loual to ICHI had a bad experience with IC Barclays. I requested 2 beds room with upgrade as per ambassador member. We had a tiny standard room without any amenities that are entitled to ambassador. And poor welcome. I do not recommend this hotel. Next time I will book the other intercontinental near time square in NYC. 16 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Service The location of the hotel was good - walking distance to most attractions. The staff were excellent and provided very useful customer service. 16 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor service The room is old and noisy. Not enough umbrella during the rainy day. Staff are not helpful, charging my bill to wrong credit card even I had informed them at the beginning, and not even say they are sorry for making mistake. 15 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Poor key card and insensitive manner I stayed for two nights. But each afternoon when I returned to the hotel, the key cards just failed to work! It was really ignoring. When I went to the reception to ask for a change in a key card, the male staff did not show much empathy at all. Poor manner. 14 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Low value for its cost the value for the rates and costs is under the current state of the hotel, it does need a refresh and modernization to match their cost. 14 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect We were so pleased with the location and had a great overall experience. An easy walk to many places yet on the more quiet side of action. Very happy with all Intercontinental Hotels we've stayed at. 11 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great upgrade! Join the affinity program. We checked in late after spending the day at the Belmont and got a free upgrade to the penthouse! (Bad day for CA Chrome, great day for us!) Enjoyed the Jacuzzi tub, got in a workout in the private gym, and took a nice long steam!! Best NY trip ever. We'll be back!! 11 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stay! The staff was superb and the accommodations were good value. Even though the hotel had a large group in house that we were not part of - the staff made us feel important. Keep up the good work! 11 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Location! We were very pleased with the New York Barclay. It's a grand old historic hotel well located just off Park Ave. in the heart of Mid-town east. The staff was friendly and plesant during all our interactions. Others have complained that the upper rooms of the hotel are in need of cosmetic attention and there is some truth to that criticism but we found the rooms to be clean, comfortable and a good size for NYC. The lobby and downstairs meeting spaces offer a real example of old style New York elegance. Can't wait to see the Barclay following its year long renovation! 09 June 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by terrible front desk staff I had booked three rooms for two nights, not an insignificant investment. When we arrived, the front desk staff was quite rude and gave us probably the worst location of rooms possible ( right next to the elevator). I changed one room to a few doors down but there were bugs on the chair in the room. I then asked for a manager and Kirk helped us out, he was very good and upgraded one room. On our second evening, I explained to the front desk that we had 6 people for breakfast which I had paid for in my room rate. We had to leave the next morning at 7:15 AM and given that breakfast did not start until 7:00 I asked this person what we could do instead, suggesting room service. Again, I had to endure their rudeness as they told me there was nothing to be done and that the money I had spent on the breakfast was wasted. I noticed while sitting in the lobby the next morning that there were a lot of guests, perhaps this hotel may want to consider a customer focused idea and open the restaurant 1/2 hour earlier! Needless to say, we downed our breakfast in 15 minutes that morning, not a great experience. To top it all off, there was a $50 charge for laundry services on one of my rooms when I checked out, which they did reverse, again with attitude. Curiously, the housekeeping and maintenance staff were friendly and helpful. It seems that the front line employees, who deal the most with guests, need some significant training. I stayed at the Intercontinental in NYC years ago and had a wonderful experience, but this time it was the opposite. 07 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Memorable Stay Stayed here for ten nights from May 25th during a holiday break. Hotel was lovely, spacious, airy and friendly. Ticked all the right boxes for us and would consider staying here again although we like to try different places when travelling. The price we paid was good for what we got, good sized room with plenty of space to move around. Bathroom was adequate with all relevant amenities within reach, bath tub was roomy and deep with a decent shower. Good hairdryer which is the best I've come across in all the hotels I've stayed in. Lovely thick towels in abundance. The bed was the best I've slept in and on our first night I slept for 10 hours after travelling there!! Good air con, coffee machine was excellent and I'm now trying to source one back home. Plenty of closet space with good storage. In room safe that was easy to use. Television was very good and of excellent quality. Walls were thin however it didn't keep me awake and no outside noise was heard from our room therefore ever night I had a blissful sleep. I celebrated my 40th birthday while there and came back after a long day to some lovely fruit, chocolates and drinks which was a lovely touch and much appreciated, the chocolates were to die for and would love to know who made them! Staff were lovely and very informative, cannot remember their names though. Over all a nice stay and would recommend to others. 06 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A Touch of Class Walking into the lobby is a step back in time. Frequent travel takes us to new, modern, and flashy hotels that are efficient and comfortable. Those of us old enough to member the days when every hotel, no matter how humble, aspired to be "grand" If you watch enough old movies and/or have the rare privilege of staying in one of those "grands", you know exactly what I mean. The Intercontinental/Barclay's lobby is the entrance to that time and place that says everything is for and about the guest. The common areas and furnishings suggest a grandeur that is, sadly, mostly long gone. Wrapping oneself in the aura of this truly grand hotel is a remarkable experience. 06 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible Have traveled to NYC 14 times in business trips Have stayed at Lexington Hotels all the time ICH has been the worse The bed quality was horrendous The staff seem unnattended 05 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Caring Staff We received excellent and friendly service from all the staff we encountered. I would definitely recommend this hotel. We felt safe at all times. 04 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Hotel Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Great location. We've been staying there for years and have made friends at the hotel. The only complaints I have are 1) poor lighting in the bathrooms and 2) breakfast is very expensive. When in New York it's the only place we even consider staying. 04 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Family Stay I booked my family into two rooms about three months before arriving at the hotel. We arrived very late on a Saturday night only to discover that the rooms we had reserved were not available. The hotel staff apologised and 'upgraded' us to two suites for the first night only. One of the suites did not have the correct bed configuration so we were given another room. On arrival at the second room we opened the door only to discover that somebody was already in bed in the room! Both myself and the occupant of the room were extremely irritated at this point. We were then allocated another suite but again that room did not have the required bed configuration. Two rollaway beds were ordered and arrived eventually. The whole check in process took over an hour! The following morning one of the rooms had to be cleared and another room was allocated. A truly appalling reservation system although the staff did try to help. The staff were so embarrassed by our experience that we were given a free breakfast on another morning later in the week. I rarely stay at IHG hotels and doubt that I will ever do so again if this is the kind of service on offer! 03 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 10 years of staying at the Barclay I first stayed with you looking for a hotel in midtown after one I had stayed with was sold out. When I arrived Kirk Lynch was on the front desk and welcomed me with pleasure. I know he was promoted to the Head of Housekeeping. I enjoyed my stay with beautiful furnishings and the service that I have never looked elsewhere when I come to New York City. David, the bellman is an excellent employee, he has often ran half way up the block to hail a taxi for me, and ask me the next day if I reached my destination . He is true asset to the hotel . Fernando is the best waiter in the city , very attentive to me and the other guests. He has a wealth of knowledge about the city. In March when I stayed with you , it was St. Patrick's Day, he wished me a Happy St. Patrick's 'Day and told me that the NYC parade was the oldest in the United States. I didn't know that but when I returned home that was the trivia question about St. Patrick's Day on the local television station . I will miss my home away from home during renovations, but as the World War II song says " We'll meet again some sunny day. Thank you again for the pleasure you have provided me, 02 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Some disappointments I always stay here when I come to NYC. THis trip I requested information from the concierge who stopped helping me when he dicovered I wasn't going to buy a tour. This has never happenbed before. Also, parking is now outrageous. I parked the car two blocks away for a third of the price. The hotel needs to rethink this. 02 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Fond memories from current and past visits. I have not travelled regularly in the past few years. However, I am resuming my travel around the world and I would like to stay at the Intercontinental Hotels as I did in the past. I was somewhat disappointed in the overall tired look of the Barclay in New York. It is my understanding it will soon be closed for renovations. Please make the bathrooms larger. I am looking to return when it is reopened. 02 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Friendly, approachable staff My wife and I celebrated our 40th anniversary the weekend of May 24,2014. The room was excellent. Location is near Times Square but not too close. On Saturday morning we exited the hotel onto Lexington Ave. where the road was closed for an open market. The hotel is old and beautiful. The rooms are well maintained and updated. We would return. 30 May 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best place to stay This is my third time staying at this hotel, and it never fails to impress me. I have been in other hotels in the same area, but the Intercontinental Barclay has become my favorite. Starting from the excellent and cordial service and ending with it's superb location. Not to mention that you feel that you are in a real hotel , with it's spacious and ample lobby. I really like it and it always makes my experience in this great city a one to remember. Next time in New York, I will stay there again. 29 May 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by wonderful hotel, great experience staying with you. We are so sad that the hotel will be under renovation for an entire year. I hope that the ambiance and spirit of the hotel will not be lost in the updating you are doing. This hotel represents the best of the old New York class and style. 29 May 2014
