New York Barclay

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 556 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by ICBarclay - closing down = terrible service Hotel is closing for renovations. This doesn't mean that the service should stop. No room service. No minibar. No amenities for Ambassador members. At least, they should warn you before you reserve. 02 July 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent I'll give it 10/10 excellent hotel, staff, rooms and location. All great. This hotel is near to 5th Ave, 7th Ave, Time Square and the central park also there is a subway station near to it which will take you where ever you want in New York City. The staff was friendly and the services great, the room so clean and comfortable. I recommend this hotel and for sure I'll choose it in my next visit to New York. 30 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable bed but room needs renovation Rooms and bathroom need renovation. Also air on divining did not work properly. 29 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by June 2014 Overall an enjoyable stay, good location, comfortable, clean and not too noisy (given the location). Biggest disappointment was being told on check in no free wifi, despite being IHG members, then we were told on check out this was wrong and we could have used wifi for free! If you are an IHG member make sure you push for free wifi on check in. If you enjoy a cup of tea, take your own tea bags as they only provide regular coffee in the room (also take your own decaf coffee). 29 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quick Overnight Biz Stay But Wished I Could Have Stayed Longer Stayed here for a two day, one night biz trip to NYC and the midtown location was perfect for the locations to which I had to go. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The Barclay has an old world feel to it with very comfortable rooms. I stayed in a Junior Suite which was sizeable and great for working away from home. 28 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great hotel, great location We stayed for a few nights in June, as a family of four visiting NYC from the UK. We had requested two adjoining / connecting rooms but the hotel weren't able to accommodate this request, which was a bit surprising and inconvenient. The hotel is grand in an old fashioned sort of way. The magnificent, glass roofed reception is impressive. Check in (and service generally) was of the highest quality with knowledgeable, friendly staff. The rooms were a bit tired and dated, but clean and comfortable enough. Small issues like having no locks on bathroom doors, lack of power points etc were minor inconveniences. We ordered room service a couple of times and were very happy with speed and quality. Not so happy with the 'instant response' button on the phone which didn't get any response at all, let alone instant ! In room wifi is free to IHG club members so f you're not already a member, join before you go. The great thing about the hotel is its location, easy walking distance of midtown attractions like the Rockefeller Centre, Empire State, Times Square etc. and of course the shops. A word of advice, take some ear plugs, NYC drivers use horns and sirens any time day or night ! Would we stay again, yes, as soon as possible ! But hopefully after a bit of refurbishment of the rooms. 28 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor staff attitude and service Dirty mini bar in room, asked three times for it to be cleaned, which it never was. I even took a photograph to show to the staff on the front desk. Despite this I was not once offered an apology for the inconvenience or lack of response, which I found more upsetting that the actual problem. The staff on the front desk that I spoke to about this particular issue were unhelpful on the point of being rude. All the other staff I interacted with, housekeeping, bell captain, etc. were all so nice and helpful. I would not stay in this hotel again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. 26 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Surprised by New York Barclay I became an Ambassador member this year. I planned a special NYC weekend with my daughter and choose the Barclay for its location (wonderful) and the opportunity to obtain an upgrade in a luxurious hotel. I was surprised to find upon arrival that an upgrade was not possible as a number of rooms had been taken out of circulation - I was told that the hotel had in fact been slated to close the following week, but a decision had just been made to leave it open until August. The scaffolding was up around the building. The hotel room was somewhat tired, and the bathrobe in the room was tattered. The mattress sagged in the middle. This was disappointing. I had made the reservation by phone call, and if I had been told of the state of this property I would have chosen a different hotel for this trip. On the bright side the staff was great, and the concierge knowledgeable and so very helpful, and the lobby beautiful. 24 June 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Memorable for the wrong reasons - stroller and wheelchair UNfriendly In June 2014 my wife and I spent 2 nights at the Intercontinental Barclay (NYC). With us was our 2-month old baby. The doormen at this hotel provided us with NO assistance (with luggage, taxis, opening doors) for our entire stay, despite us entering and exiting with a stroller approximately 10 times over a 48-hour period. Furthermore, the 'disabled entry' button (upon entering the building) did not work, as we discovered upon entering for the first time, unassisted. When I mentioned this to the counter staff (because the doormen were nowhere to be seen) we were fobbed off with "no, I think it's fine, but I'll ask someone to take a look". It didn't work for our entire stay. The first room we were placed in was modern and well appointed, but had a strong smell of smoke (for which we don't blame the hotel). We were then moved to a rear corner room (#1242, indicative of the room's vintage) as the decor and fittings clearly had not been updated in many years. An old bar fridge sat on the carpet and room amenities (coffee machine etc) were propped on unstable side tables. This room looked and felt a star lower than the first we were in. Bottom line: Very poor value for money; expect poor service as you enter and exit this hotel, especially evident if you have a wheelchair or stroller; avoid smoke-infused rooms; ask for a 'modern' room. An organization (I was visiting) placed me in this hotel (along with 40 or so others) - next time I will ask them not to do so. 23 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Intercontinental Property Had a great stay here. All of the staff went above and beyond. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in NYC. 23 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Location good, service poor The hotel is in a great location for a visit to New York. We were there for a holiday, close enough that we walked to most everywhere we wanted to go. The room was clean, not large but more than adequate for us. The staff was poor though. When we checked in, the front desk was great but after that, if we stopped or called to ask a question (which we did a few times when we first arrived), we left with the feeling we were taking up their valuable time. The concierge was poor, we didn't meet his standards of whom he wanted to help was the impression we got from the day staff but we stopped later in the evening and the change of staff was a change of attitude. He was awesome. The Doorman Staff were excellent also. We stopped at the lounge for a drink the first day on our way back to the room and the bartender was more interested in the FIFA cup playing than waiting on the few people in the lounge. Overall for the price, I am sure I could find similar accommodation in the same area that would be just as suitable so not sure would pick the Barclay again. 23 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by NEW YOR Barclay Buena ubicación. Falta de atención en mostrador de check in. Habitaciones antiguas 22 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Another great stay at the Barclay A wonderful hotel with great staff. Unfortunately, it will soon close for a year for renovations. 22 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Classic New York We have just spent three wonderful nights at the Intercontinental Barclay. One couldn't ask for a better location. Our room was spacious, quiet and comfortable. Sure it shows a bit of wear around the edges but the hotel exudes class and comfort. I'll be back. 20 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 It's just ok For the kind of trip we had to New York, family fun Fun and sightseeing, this was not the right property Reception was ok, housekeeping ok, bar service ok, If your thinking of having breakfast in the hotel Don't!!!!!! $45 each all the normal (not business) Customers were talking about this So in summary comfortable bed/room and foyer But dated and expensive 20 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Barclay Staff Excell at Hospitality The Barclay has been my home base in NYC for years. The friendly staff make it easy to recommend this property to anyone looking for a place to stay in midtown Manhattan. 19 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good location This is a nice and safe place, close to time square and the metro station. Rooms needs more care regarding what is working and what needs to be fixed. The mini-fridge had old rotten eggs that smelled really bad and was not checked nor cleaned from previous guests. The items in the fridge were not checked before we cam in and I had to ask the staff to be sure to have all items accounted for from the previous guest so I would not be charged for things items I did not consume. Parking is overpriced. The rooms were quite. The survey asked for swimming pool but the facility does not have a pool. Room keys did not work on the 3rd night and we had to go down and reset them for some reason even though I asked the staff on check-in to be sure this would not happen. They were automatically deactivated due to a second reservation. 19 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stay Although we heard the hotel was about to close, the management and team members were all on it for our stay. Can't wait to see what you will do to the place! 18 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor experience Treated very poorly by front desk and bounced around to 3 different rooms. Restaurant was expensive and the food uninspiring. The walls were thin so I could clearly hear my neighbors the entire night. The bell hop maid service and door staff was the only bright spot to a dismal visit. 18 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Low Key Elegance The fact that the Barclay doesn't front a major thoroughfare (hence reduced traffic noise) indicates to me the statement that they want to make about their hotel. I found everything about the Barclay classy and comfortable but not nearly as gaudy or trendy as some of its neighbors. Understated elegance is a good description. The staff was always polite and helpful and never made me feel uncomfortable despite the decidedly non-business nature of my stay. The hotel's historical architecture limiting the size of the bathroom was one of my few criticisms. And with so many tall buildings nearby, a room with a view is nearly impossible. But the key factors, comfortable bed, excellent temperature control, good water pressure in the shower, and good internet make the Barclay a reliable choice for midtown East. 18 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful Art Deco Hotel We booked the stay as a Celebration for my 50th Birthday, it was every thing and more than we could have wished for, the whole week was perfect. The Staff were wonderful, very helpful and courteous. The room was lovely, and although we did not have a view it did not mar the rest of the room, we had loads of space, and plenty of storage for all of our belongings. The location was perfect, only a stones through from 5th Avenue and The Rockeffeler Centre, Time Square and about 20 mins walk from the Hop on Hop off bus service. Infact everything was within walking distance. We couldn't have asked for a better Hotel to spend a very special week. 17 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not up to Intercontinental standards Being a regular and loual to ICHI had a bad experience with IC Barclays. I requested 2 beds room with upgrade as per ambassador member. We had a tiny standard room without any amenities that are entitled to ambassador. And poor welcome. I do not recommend this hotel. Next time I will book the other intercontinental near time square in NYC. 16 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Service The location of the hotel was good - walking distance to most attractions. The staff were excellent and provided very useful customer service. 16 June 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor service The room is old and noisy. Not enough umbrella during the rainy day. Staff are not helpful, charging my bill to wrong credit card even I had informed them at the beginning, and not even say they are sorry for making mistake. 15 June 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Poor key card and insensitive manner I stayed for two nights. But each afternoon when I returned to the hotel, the key cards just failed to work! It was really ignoring. When I went to the reception to ask for a change in a key card, the male staff did not show much empathy at all. Poor manner. 14 June 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Low value for its cost the value for the rates and costs is under the current state of the hotel, it does need a refresh and modernization to match their cost. 14 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect We were so pleased with the location and had a great overall experience. An easy walk to many places yet on the more quiet side of action. Very happy with all Intercontinental Hotels we've stayed at. 11 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great upgrade! Join the affinity program. We checked in late after spending the day at the Belmont and got a free upgrade to the penthouse! (Bad day for CA Chrome, great day for us!) Enjoyed the Jacuzzi tub, got in a workout in the private gym, and took a nice long steam!! Best NY trip ever. We'll be back!! 11 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stay! The staff was superb and the accommodations were good value. Even though the hotel had a large group in house that we were not part of - the staff made us feel important. Keep up the good work! 11 June 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Location! We were very pleased with the New York Barclay. It's a grand old historic hotel well located just off Park Ave. in the heart of Mid-town east. The staff was friendly and plesant during all our interactions. Others have complained that the upper rooms of the hotel are in need of cosmetic attention and there is some truth to that criticism but we found the rooms to be clean, comfortable and a good size for NYC. The lobby and downstairs meeting spaces offer a real example of old style New York elegance. Can't wait to see the Barclay following its year long renovation! 09 June 2014
