LOCAL ESSENTIALS

THE PERFECT DAY

MORNING

Take a morning stroll down to the nearby Zocalo of our colonial historical town, watch the world go by and enjoy a rich blend of aromatic coffee from the northern hills of Cuetzalan in any of the cafes scattered around the main square. From here, a short walk takes you to El Parian, where you can purchase original crafts from the region. Puebla is also famous for its Talavera ceramics; in downtown you will find some factories around, where you can watch craftsmen transforming dull slabs of clay into works of art using ancient techniques that have prevailed throughout the centuries.

AFTERNOON

Located near the Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl volcanoes, the enigmatic Cholula, which literally translated means "Place of those who fled", is a millennial city (the oldest in America; it has been inhabited since 500 B.C.) and now is home of many small restaurants and craft shops. After taking a stroll down the "zocalo" (main square), make your way to the great pyramid of Tlachihualtepetl (The handmade hill), the world's largest pyramid by volume, explore its inner tunnels and murals, and finish your visit climbing up to the top of the pyramid, to discover the beauty of the Nuestra Senora de los Remedios church, from where you will get the most stunning view of the volcanoes. A landscape to remember!

EVENING

Home to an eclectic mix of the city's finest restaurants, Juarez Avenue is one of the most important streets of Puebla. Here you will find a variety of restaurants, bars, clubs and coffee houses serving dishes from around the world. It’s just 10 minutes away from the hotel, so while leaving the “fiesta” might prove difficult, getting back to the hotel won't. If partying is not in your itinerary, then go to "Los Fuertes", as the locals call to this historical place where a famous battle happened. Now is a modern and beautiful meeting point where you will find "La Mantarraya" (the stingray), a park with an astonishing viewpoint to the city, and where you will admire all the jewels of our city at once.

INSIDER TIPS

LOCAL CULTURE

Religion

Puebla is a very religious city and most of the grander buildings and monuments owe their existence to the Catholic Church. Along with the magnificent Cathedral, which took over 100 years to be built, Puebla has over 70 churches and almost all are located in our Historic Center. Are you planning to visit them? Please note that all churches in downtown remain closed between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Electricity Requirements

Mexico operates under the American system of 110 V to 60 Hz. The plugs are American style, with two parallel blades or three prongs.

Valuables

As with all large cities, you will need to take care of your valuables. When you are not using your camera make sure it is safely packed.

Tipping

Tipping is optional, but between 10% and 15% is the usual.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Gastronomy

Puebla's Gastronomy is one of the most varied and exquisite of Mexico and the world. Being internationally recognized for its emblematic and delicious dishes such as Mole Poblano, Chiles en Nogada, Chalupas and the legendary Cemitas.

Talavera

Puebla’s Talavera is one of the few Mexican products with seal of designation of origin, and has been elaborated, without interruption, for more than four centuries using the same techniques. This makes it one of the most important expressions of folk art in Mexico. Ask to the Concierge about a tour to the traditional talavera factories.

A Very Historical Center

The Historical Center of Puebla, was declared World Heritage by UNESCO, preserves more than 2,600 monuments in 391 blocks, distributed in 6.9 square km, being one of the cities with more monuments in America. The Concierge will be glad to arrange a tour for you to the Historical Center of Puebla.

Altitude

Puebla is 2175 meters above sea level. Although altitude sickness is rarely a problem, make sure you drink plenty of fluids, especially for the first few days.

WHAT TO PACK

Appropriate weather clothing.

Puebla has a changing climate throughout the year, going from highs up to 90 ºF (32 ºC) during Spring and Summer, and lows up to 32 ºF (0 ºC) during Winter, with a marked rainy season from June to September; we recommend packing accordingly.

Camera

Treasure the best memories of your trip to Puebla. A camera is always recommended for catching unexpected things, like a volcanic exhalation from the Popocatepetl.

Money

Allow yourself $500 MXN per day. Credit cards are generally accepted; preferably Visa or MasterCard.
