Mark Hopkins San Francisco

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 670 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by General Great place to stay and would recommend - handy to town and has a great feel to the place Only negatives - having to pay $15 a day for wifi. These days it should be part of the room cost - or free to a level so you can down load emails ad search for local attractions etc - not for down loading movies etc We had a great night at the top of the mark. We were there from 7 to 11.30, so dinned there as well. Service food was great. However, was disappointed to have to close my tab 3 times during this period as wait staf changed shifts / stations. Cheapened the experience an was interruptive. Understand they want there tip - but must be a better way Thx again , was a great stay at the hotel and San Francisco 13 July 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Charges for Wifi This is a very nice hotel in a very good location. Unfortunately they continue to charge for wifi - something that even the most basic properties no longer charge for. Even Holiday Inn which is a subsidiary of this company doesn't charge for this service. This makes no sense to me. 12 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 4th of July weekend The hotel and room were very comfortable. The exercise room could use better and more equipment. Al the bellman was excellant and took great care of us. 11 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful experience From the moment we drove up until the moment we drove away, we had a wonderful time! Never spent a night in SF so this was a great first experience! No matter what we did, staff called us by name...definitely made to feel special! 11 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Concierge experience, eh The hotel was lovely, in a good location (cable car stops close by), room with a view. I've stayed in many Intercontinental properties throughout the world and chose the Mark Hopkins based on its reputation and history plus my experience in non-US locations. Your front desk and bell staff is excellent. However, the concierge personnel on during the days was probably the most unhelpful and unfriendly I've ever experienced. Each time I visited (and I stopped after two, with two different male staff members), my impression was that I was bothering them. Once, I asked about getting a map. The gentleman on duty couldn't tell me how to get to Golden Gate Park by bus and didn't offer to print info from the web. I ended up "Googling" the info myself. The second time, I asked for support in obtaining a restaurant reservation. The telephone rang and eventually, I walked away and found the information myself. Really poor customer service. They just didn't care about me or my needs. I wasn't seeking special treatment, simply requesting mundane information/assistance. Would I stay at the hotel again? Probably not. I'd give the other SF property a try. Really a shame, because the Mark Hopkins is a classic. 11 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable bed Small closet and not much drawer space for two people Steep hills to walk, coffee only in the morning 11 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best 4th July at the Top of the mark! My stayed was terrific, have not been to the city since 1967! My bed was sooo comfortable and the pillows I missed them. Great location , polite staff. George the best bartender at the Top! 10 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stay My husband and I stayed two nights in early July and we really enjoyed it. The hotel is right on the top of Knob Hill with a great view and easy access to everything. Walking from the hotel to anyplace is easy because it is downhill. Walking back to the hotel is much more difficult because it is uphill all the way. We learned to take the California Street car to return. The room was fantastic and spacious, fantastic pillows, great view, wonderful bathroom! Staff was fantastic as well. We watched the fireworks from the Top of the Mark. A truly enjoyable stay and we will return. 10 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful Place to Stay Wonderful hotel in the heart of Nob Hill. Close to all the sights in the city. Our room had a great view of downtown and of the bay bridge. Wish the bathroom had been a little larger. Staff was top notch; very attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and prompt when service was requested. Concierge was also very nice and helpful as were all the bellhops. 08 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful view and unfriendly staff Overall we enjoyed our experience at the Mark Hopkins. I think we would go back as the room was spacious, clean and had a marvelous view. A nice space for the price. That being said, we were less than pleased with the public spaces in the hotel. The lobby was unwelcoming and crowded. It had people and their luggage all over and was not an inviting place. The front door staff were helpful but the front desk staff was very unfriendly. It was almost like they were doing us a favor answering our questions. No attempt was made to be pleasant! First of all we were surprised to have to pay for a newspaper on Sunday-even the SF Chronicle. No one made it clear from the outset that we would have newspapers on any day except Sunday. Also we were on the "Club" level which supposedly gave us some extra amenities. Since what these perks were was very unclear, I asked the front staff and found out that it entitled us to pay $30.00 per person per day for a continental breakfast? That didn't make much sense to me and it was not ever explained by the staff. 08 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Summer in San Francisco Great location and hotel in the middle of all the places your are likely to want to see. 07 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice and comfortable, but not top marks Yes, the Mark Hopkins met my expectations for a high-end property, starting with a friendly welcome by John at the front desk who found a room for my early arrival, but they missed an opportunity with the Top of the Mark, their well-known top floor restaurant with incredible views of the city. In trying to figure out if they served light meals in mid-afternoon. I pressed the button on my room phone labeled "Top of the Mark" and was connected with housekeeping. I then dialed the operator and was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by Jason who pronounced my name properly (it's a tough one). He connected me to the restaurant, but I got an answering machine suggesting I make reservations online. I then went to the elevator but the restaurant floor was locked out, even though signs in the lobby indicated the restaurant was open. This all sounds trivial, but it's not the type of experience one would expect for this hotel. 07 July 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by First trip to SF Was really excited to visit this great city. Overall enjoyed it but compared to other icon hotels, this one did not meet my expectations. Still a very nice hotel. 06 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Elegance and Comfort at its Best We stayed recently at the Mark Hopkins, San Francisco and found it be both elegant, yet comfortable. It was my husbands 50th b-day and our 25th wedding anniversary, and the hotel sent up a bottle of champagne and cupcakes with a b-day greeting. They also gave us a room on the 10th floor with a nice view. The hotel is very conveniently located by most areas that are walkable (Chinatown, The Pier, and the Financial District). Parking though is very expensive. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. 05 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent service I received excellent service in a great room. My trip was for business and they saw to my every need, including providing transportation to my work site. Room was clean and comfortable with amazing views. Room service food was excellent. I would highly recommend this property. 03 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by SFGMC is well respected by Mark Hopkins SF The Mark Hopkins was a supporter of the SFGMC I am Harvey Milk concert in spades. The hotel and its staff went to great lengths to make us feel welcome, and at home. The rooms were outstanding. We are so appreciative of the best of the best supporting the best of the best. 03 July 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointing while the hotel has some strong qualities (in particular the location and lounge team/Anna incredibly helpful and welcoming), the overall impression of the stay is below average. VERY noisy suite (elevator and poor phonic isolation), so-so food selection, gym that seems to date from the previous century,... i thought i'd be seduced, but the charms didnt operate and i left disappointed. 02 July 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Stay Hello, I'm glad I received this email, as I did want to let you know that this experience was NOT as pleasurable as it has been in the past. 1. I should receive an upgraded room upon arrival; however I don't believe that this happened. When we arrived to our room the room was very small. The TV stand stuck out so far into the room that I walked into the corner of it a couple of times the short time I was in the room. I had to go back down to the check-in desk to ask for an upgrade. The next room was a junior suite and was very nice and I believe I should have received that room from the start. 2. As stated on your website returning guests would receive an amenity, i.e. fruit basket etc.... I NEVER received it after asking FOUR times for it. Once they tried to deliver it at 9:45PM. I chose not to answer the door. I called the next morning to the let them know they could deliver it and it never showed up. At checkout I brought it up again and was given a bottle of red wine. It’s really not about receiving it, as it is that I had to ask for something that your chain commits to doing for returning guests and should be in the room upon arrival. 3. It was our wedding anniversary and in the past there would be recognition of this by receiving a bottle of Champagne or something to acknowledge that it was my anniversary. There was no acknowledgment of my anniversary this time. As I was told at the check in desk a few times I am a loyal customer however I don't feel I was treated that way. This stay at the Mark was not the most relaxing stay and I will think hard next year for our anniversay if I want to stay at the Mark. The goal of these anniversary weekends is to be as relaxing as possible and enjoy the time we have together and this was NOT the case. The annual rates for the Ambassador level have gone up but it seems the service has not gone up with the rates in this case. Thank you, 29 June 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Roll it All In We made our reservation through the Mark Hopkins itself, feeling we would receive the most accurate information from an employee familiar with this specific hotel, rather than an Intercontinental employee... We were very happy with the Room with a View and Breakfast package that we chose. Unfortunately (as I was told by the manager when we arrived), it was not "valet parking only", and we COULD have reserved a parking place within the hotel for a fee. I had been told when making our reservation that it was ONLY valet parking, and we were not about to hand over the keys of our car to anyone. By the time we arrived, there were no more spaces available, so we went with our first plan of parking at the Grace Cathedral parking garage (where we found every model of luxury car imaginable, whose owners also did not want to hand over their car keys). We were also disappointed with lack of internet availability, which is offered at $9.95/day...fine, but when you find it impossible to actually connect and call the concierge for assistance, he offers "dependable internet" for $40.00/day!!! Not the offered deal, guys. Starbucks worked just fine, for free, and we got to meet some city locals, as a bonus. Although the shower did not drain properly (room 1433), the shower curtain was so lightweight that it clung to us as we showered, and there were only two towels instead of the luxurious four that we expected, I have to say that the shampoo and conditioner were top-notch and the cleaning staff was very friendly and amenable. Everyone greeted us. Dear Mark Hopkins, do us (and yourself) a favor: increase the price of a room to include a parking place and internet (or make that an "ultimate package" option along the lines of the "room and breakfast" deal you already have), and don't make it appear that you are nickel-and-diming us to death. All in all, we loved being in San Francisco again, seeing the Transamerica building out our window in the morning, and tramping the streets as if we were 20 years old again. Thanks for the safe haven. 28 June 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 Comfortable but somewhat old-fashioned The Mark Hopkins offers opulent surroundings and a very clean, comfortable room, but the bathrooms could use a little updating. Specifically, there's no fan in the bathroom. The windows open a few inches, but a fan would be nice, too. Also, advertising windows that open is somewhat deceptive--none of ours opened more than a few inches, and the maid left a window open twice, for no apparent reason, since we had left it closed. 28 June 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Long waiting line for check in Only two chek-in agents were working when I was forved to wait to check in. I was forced to wait in a line to check in for about 8 min, which was much longer than I can endure to wait for check in. Ambassor previlege was not compliled, which I mean is no free water and complimeantary fruits were not supplied as was the previous stay in the middle of May. This time I claimed that and the water and fruits were delevered on the second day. Other than these were very good. 27 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best ever! The service of the hotel is excellent. I have perfect time during my vacation. Wish every Intercon around the world have the same quality. Thank you for nice hotel. See Intercon again soon :) 25 June 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Location I suggest only to consider the WiFi connection for guests with no charge. 22 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by All needs addressed The hotel was very comfortable. I was able to enjoy every minute of San Francisco without thinking about lodging type stuff. 20 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great San Fran Hotel San Fran was the first stop of our west coast vacation. Choose the Mark Hopkins because of its location. The staff at the hotel confirmed our choice was right. Everyone was very friendly and helpful but I must say the front door personnel are the BEST. We asked for a taxi and doorman said hotel car was available so let us get you to your destination. What a nice surprise. If ever in San Fran again will always stay at the Mark Hopkins. 20 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Always love the Hopkins I always enjoy staying at the Mark Hopkins. The rooms are immaculate and the service is great. I always ask to get (and always receive) one of the corner rooms with windows facing two directions. Overall, I look forward to my stays at the Hopkins. It is a great place. My only complaint this visit was using the elevators Friday night (June 14th, 2013). I gather that our nation's vice president, Joe Biden, was staying at the Hopkins, and using the elevators Friday evening was nearly impossible (over a 20 minute wait to get to the Top of the Mark). While I certainly appreciated getting a missive on the 13th about street traffic snags, I wish I had also gotten some kind of missive about possible snags within the Hopkins itself. On the one hand, it's kind of neat knowing a celebrity is near, but on the other hand, it's annoying when the security surrounding that VIP gets in the way. :) Also wish the WiFi was cheaper (or complimentary). But it's really tough to pass up a stay at the Mark Hopkins. It's truly a great hotel. 20 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stay, Great Nob Hill Experience The staff were friendly and anticipated our needs. The service could not have been better! We loved your hotel and all that you did to make things enjoyable. I would strongly recommend this hotel for an excellent experience of San Francisco. The location makes it easy to get to everything and the facilities and staff make it comfortable and luxurious at the same time. Thanks for a great experience! P.S. Did I say it felt like I was sleeping on a cloud.....oh my! 19 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great room and service The room was very comfortable with excellent views. The furnishings were good and the visit was just perfect. The hotel offered good old-fashioned classy comfort in a superb area of San Francisco. Lots of restaurants, cafes, bars and even an organic supermarket within minutes of the hotel. The staff were very helpful and patient willing to help with all our queries. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting San Francisco. 18 June 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great location The location is great, within walking distance to a lot of shops and restaurants. As a female traveling alone, I am always cognizant of where the hotels I stay in are located, and with this hotel, I never felt uncomfortable walking around a few blocks by myself. 17 June 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful view The staff was very friendly and my room had a beautiful view but that is pretty much where it ended. The feather bed was lumpy and feathers were coming out and poking into my skin. The room smelled stale, as if it was in dire need of deep cleaning. Then when I checked out, I asked the young woman at the front desk to bill my personal card for one of the expenses and leave everything else on my corporate card. Surprise! The next day I found that the entire amount had been deducted from my checking account. I would most likely not return. 16 June 2013
