Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Two tired travellers who felt at home My husband and myself always treat ouself and stay at Melb Intercontinental for special events. We were engaged there in Sep last year! 12 months on and we are on our driving 'road trip' honeymoon travelling Melb - Queensland! A last minute decision we decided 2 hrs out of Sydney that we would drive in and stay the night. My husband had never seen Sydney so after a quick call we were booked in to stay the night. By the time we finally reached Sydney intercontinental we had been on the road for 11 hours! We were pretty tired! The concierge and car staff were brilliant helping us empty all our luggage and delivering it up to the room for us. The beautiful Mia on check-in, hearing that we were on our honeymoon upgraded us to a beautiful harbour view room, and later some bubbles & chocolates arrived complimentary! The thing that we noticed was the smell of the Melb intercontinental and Sydney intercontinental was the same, which made us feel at home! Obviously the same cleaning product or a diffuser in the reception checkin. We felt exhausted but were looked after so kindly. We are not rich, so staying at the intercontinental is always a luxury treat for us, and it is always our choice of hotel when we can afford the treat! After a low key dinner in the rocks we returned to sleep like little babies. The next morning we enjoyed the buffet breakfast (we do think Melbourne does it slightly better with their custom egg cooking section) but none the less very good. The great thing about Sydney intercontinental is the location. We were able to walk right down to circular quay and opera house in under two minutes!!! Finally upon departure we got our car back and were helped with 'how to get out of Sydney' directions! My only mistake that I made was provide my debit card on checkin, but pay with cash on departure. Now my funds are locked until they are released. Not great for a couple on a budget driving honeymoon. I knew they secure the funds but not for up to ten days, and just wished the staff who took the cash on checkout would have advised us to keep the cash and use the debit funds already locked in the computer. Silly mistake I guess, so no splurging now. Will definitely try and return on our drive home to Melbourne at the end of our honeymoon. 08 September 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Execellent staff and experience. comfortable stay Returned for our 20 year wedding anniversary. Fantastic and personal service. Got a room upgrade to a suite and an anniiversary gift on arrival. We were also offered a late check out of 2pm, which was just what we needed. Ordered room service for Breakfast and it was amazing especially with the view of Sydney Harbour from our room. Best spot in the hotel. All the staff we encountered were fabulous and the rooms were very clean and comfortable with all amenities required. Thank you again for making our annivesary such a perfect and enjoyable experience. 07 September 2014

The ambience was friendly and comfortable. Parts of the hotel are in need of a refurbishment, especially the public areas. Look forward to a return visit. 07 September 2014

The room and hotel itself is very eligent, clean and a very warm feeling. The staff were great and they were always happy to help with any query. 03 September 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good choice in a field of lots of options This property in downtown Sydney, near Circular Quay and the Opera House is in a very convenient location. It's good for walking, sight-seeing and for business or pleasure. The hotel has two good restaurants. The bar is average. The setting is good, but the atmosphere is too open and not intimate. The service staff at the front desk and the bellmen are excellent, but in the restaurant, the service is average and they seem agnostic to the customer. The price is high, but I suppose it's competitive in the area. As a Gold member, I would have expected breakfast free, instead of $40 per day, but the breakfast is excellent. 01 September 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A Nice Hotel with Great Views It was an overall enjoyable experience with the great view of the Opera House and Harbour bridge. I did not regret paying more for the Opera House view, and would recommend it to anybody who is visiting Sydney for the first time. The fireworks display on the 23rd was amazing and certainly a very pleasant surprise. The view of fireworks at almost eye level is indeed priceless. The staff was readily available to assist, I was especially appreciative that the umbrella's were readily made available to us when it rained. I had issues with the internet and a staff readily responded in 5 mins to my room to assist me on it. I have planned this to be a walking vacation, the location of this hotel was great and I enjoy walking in gardens and walked at least 2 times daily to the Opera House and The Rocks. Overall it is a good hotel but I did encounter some issues. First, there was a que, even on the ambassador lane! Not really an inconvenience for this trip, however do consider having more front desk personnel. The club lounge was offered in lieu of my guaranteed room upgrade, which was a mutual agreement. Although I did not like the policy that I can only order another alcoholic beverage only upon completely consuming my current drink. Of the 4 nights I stayed I was only up there for 1 time during the evening cocktail drinks and was a bit annoyed by this policy because I only asked for the drink as I was VERY near completing the current drink . I believe that a bit of tack was needed. However my major disappointment was with the housekeeping. I left my room early on the 24th and only returned at 3pm to find that the room was not made up. I called to get it done but even after a wait of 45 mins there wasn't anybody in sight. Utterly disappointing, as I wanted to rest in a properly made up bed. I decided it was too much effort and just rested an unmade bed. Finally, noise insulation was poor as I could hear noises from rooms next and above mine. 01 September 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nearly perfect Firstly let me say the concierge, front desk and cleaning staff were first class and we received great service. The room was clean and bed very comfortable. HOWEVER, our stay was let down by the staff and food service at breakfast. We waited 20 mins for a seat (9.15am), which we didn't mind because it was Sunday but then had to wait 45 mins for a cup of tea (tea bag in a pot - how hard is that?#. When asking the waitress after 30 mins where our tea was; we got a very frosty reply about being busy! The food was cold, and left to sit out in the open. My sister asked for a freshly cooked poached egg as the ones on display looked like they had been sitting there for ever and was told "you wait 5 minute, 5 minute" in an angry voice! Well guess what the egg never arrived! The breakfast was $42.00 each for the buffet which I would never pay that for #I wasted my 1 and only voucher). My recommendation is by all means stay there BUT "don't have breakfast". 28 August 2014

The location was unbeatable for its picturesque charm and for access to ferries, trains and buses. Breakfast was my favorite and the best I've had anywhere in the world. All the great amenities of being an Ambassador Member were afford us including free wifi, early/late checkin/checkout, fruit basket (with an unexpected bottle of wine) and more. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in this lovely part of Sydney. 28 August 2014

Did not have any problems during the stay. A minor billing issue was immediately correct (due to a misdialed telephone call picked up as an international call). Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I have already booked my next business trip here Although I stayed in a standard room, I found the room to be one of the better I've stayed in (for the standard) in Sydney. Simple things like several power outlets easily reachable from the desk or bedside make life easier for a modern business traveller with lots of gadgets. This in particular made my stay stand out. One night there was a mess-up with my room service meal, and it wasn't delivered. I followed up sometime later and the issue was dealt with. The next evening when I returned to my room, I found a hand written apology from the service manager, a complimentary bottle of champagne and a box of five rather delicious macaroons. On checkout, the room service meal fee was waived. These customer service gestures more than compensated for my minor inconvenience! Well done! Don't forget to sign up for IHG Rewards to get free internet and Qantas Frequent Flyer points. 25 August 2014

Pay the extra to upgrade to the Club Lounge on the top floor if it is available as the drinks at sunset over the harbour make it well worth while. Big thanks to all the team at the hotel (particularly the staff in the Club Lounge) who make it a memorable experiance. 25 August 2014

Lounge elevator lobby has strange semi-gloss purple paint better suited to a love hotel, ruins the mood before you even get in the lounge. I know it's silly to focus on one thing, but I can't get it out of my mind. I was upgraded to an opera-view suite, even that amazing view couldn't save the room. Best features are the view, location, and staff. All were 10/10. The desk, lounge, and bell staff were absolutely ace. Don't know about concierge or F&B. Best check-in I've ever had. Perfect one-minute briefing on Sydney. Wish I remembered his name (a slavic name maybe?), but was tired after the flight. Lounge staff remembered my name after one visit. Bell staff handled several unusual luggage requests with ease. Would not stay here again until they update, but good stay because of view and staff. 19 August 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by very convenient place to stay This is a very comfortable hotel in a very good place, within easy walking distance of the Sydney Opera House. For that convenience however it is rather expensive and for us at least best reserved for some special occasion. 18 August 2014
