To start the day, take a stroll down Kaerntnerstrasse, the city's premier shopping street, and do some window shopping. Stop off at the Demel Coffee House - one of the most traditional coffee house of Imperial Vienna - and enjoy a coffee and pastry in its lavish Rococo and Art Deco interior. Afterwards, make your way to the Imperial Palace to see the horses of the Spanish Riding School in training. This is the only riding school in the world where classic dressage is still practised in its purest form. Then, take a walk through the historic and imposing Heldenplatz (Heroes' Square), arriving at the Museum Quarter.
Spend some time exploring the wealth of art in the immense Natural Art and Fine Art museums. The latter just recently re-opened Kunstkammer - the cradle of the museum - where you can experience a world of beauty and wit, curiosities and wonder. Kunstkammer is the most important collection of its kind in the world. Alernatively you could visit the Museum Quarter and pop into the Leopold Museum, the world's largest showcase of works by the Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele. Lovers of contemporary art should visit MUMOK (the Museum of Modern Art), and families might want to have a look at the ZOOM children's museum. For a fabulous lunch you should stop at Glacis Beisl with its beautiful sidewalk cafe.
To finish your day in Vienna, a musical performance is a must. For opera, check what's on at the famous Vienna State Opera or the Volksoper. In the famous Musikverein or Konzerthaus there are outstanding classical concerts performed by the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna Symphonic orchestras. To visit Vienna’s sights individually, it is best to use public transportation which is fast and safe. Venna offers a very good transportation network and cheap tickets (EUR 2.10 for a single ride if the ticket is bought ahead of time, EUR 2.20 for a single ride when bought on the vehicle itself). Alternatively, visitors can buy The Vienna Card which costs EUR 19.90 and allows to discover the city for 72 hours by underground, bus or tram.
Most Viennese speak English, and you will find the locals are extremely helpful.

Each year the international consulting firm Mercer does a survey to evaluate the quality of living in 221 cities around the world. For the fourth time in a row, the survey results give Vienna top grades, ranking Austria's capital as the WORLD'S MOST LIVABLE CITY 2012. The survey compares the political, social and economic climate, medical care, education, and infrastructural conditions such as public transporation, power and water supply. It also takes info consideration recreational offers such as restaurants, theaters, cinemas, sports facility, the availability of all kinds of consumer goods, as well as environmental conditions - from green space to air pollution.
It is recommended that you exchange some money before you leave home - just enough to cover airport incidentals and transportation to the hotel - and avoid unpleasant queues at the airport ATMs.
