MAÑANAMy favorite thing in the morning is to go to the old city centre, or Balad, and wander around the traditional souks and street markets, looking at the wares, listening to the haggling, and stopping here and there for coffee or sweets. After that, a trip up to the Citadel, the hilltop centre of ancient Amman. Here, one can walk among many reminders of the city's long history, such as the remains of the Roman temple of Hercules, a sixth-century Byzantine church, and the impressive Umayyad Palace. The National Archaeological Museum is also here, and has a small but fascinating collection of antiquities, including pieces of the Dead Sea Scrolls. On the way back down, pass by the palace and burial place of the late King Hussein's. |
TARDEThe Dead Sea is just 45 minutes from Amman. It really is one of the most incredible places in the world, over 400 meters below sea level. The name speaks for itself. It is one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth and there is no life in it at all. There is no feeling like the one I get every time I go there and drink a cocktail while floating in the lovely warm waters, gazing at the wonderful views of the West Bank. I then take a mud bath full of warm minerals, which leaves my skin perfect. |
NOCHEAl-Pasha Turkish bath is a perfect place to spend a relaxing evening - comforting and luxurious. Turkish baths are famous in the Middle East, dating from the time when Jordan and other countries were all part of the Ottoman Empire. I never feel cleaner than I do after a massage and the hot water treatment at the Al-Pasha, while sipping some real refreshing juices. The baths are only 20 minutes' walk from the hotel. |
CULTURA LOCALATTIREJordan is primarily a Muslim country, although the freedom of all religions is protected. Muslim women's clothing often covers their arms, legs and hair. Western women are not subject to these customs, but revealing clothing is never appropriate and conservative dress is advisable for both men and women in the downtown part of Amman. Shorts are rarely worn by either sex, and would be out of place in the downtown area. Topless sunbathing is prohibited and one-piece swimsuits are preferred, although two-piece swimsuits are acceptable at hotel pools. BUSINESS HOURSFriday and Saturday are the days when everything closes. Many businesses, including airline offices, travel agencies and some shops, also close on Thursday afternoon, although department stores and supermarkets remain open. A few businesses and shops close for some of Sunday. Banks are open 8.30am to 3pm, and some reopen between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. COFFEEShaking your coffee cup from side to side is the way to indicate that you don't want it filled up again. GREETING'Al Salamo Alaikom' ('peace be upon you') is the traditional greeting. More simply 'marhaba' is the equivalent to 'hello'. POST OFFICESPost office opening hours are 7am to 7pm (closed Fridays) in Summer, and 7am to 5pm (Closed Fridays) in Winter. |

QUÉ METER EN LA MALETABackpackIf you're planning any hiking, bring a backpack with you. Those manufactured in Jordan are very badly made. ClothesPack swimming gear even in winter, since the temperature is fine for bathing all year round in the Dead Sea or at Aqaba. ShoesPack a pair of comfy walking shoes, especially if you are planning to visit Petra or Wadi Rum. WeatherWinter is mild, although it often rains and sometimes even snows. Summer is very hot. There is almost no humidity in summer and often a nice breeze at night. The Jordan valley and Aqaba are 5-10 degrees warmer than Amman. |
