RECOMENDACIONES
LOCALES
MAÑANAA perfect day in Montreal should start with a walk through the oldest part of town, called Vieux Montreal. As you walk, take a look around and enjoy the architecture of the many restored buildings dating from the 18th and 19th century. After a short walk, you will get to Place Jacque-Cartier. In this area, you will find outdoor café’s, street performers, flower sellers and horse-drawn carriages. Find an outdoor terrace and take a little break. Then, head towards the Notre-Dame Basilica to visit one of the crown jewels in Quebec's rich religious heritage or to the Pointe-a-Callière Archaeology Museum to learn more about Montreal’s foundation. After that, you might be interested in doing some shopping. If you are looking for original local gifts, be sure to stop at the Marché Bonsecours, where you will find Quebecois designers and artists. |
TARDEStart the afternoon with a lunch in an Old Montreal bistro. Then, take a cab or the subway to get to the Mont-Royal Park. This 200-hectare park occupies part of the mountain that lies in the midst of Montreal Island, and includes the highest spot in the city (234m). Its hiking trails and panoramic viewpoints are not to be missed. Many activities are available, depending on the season, including: biking, pedal-boating, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. |
NOCHEThis perfect day should end with a gastronomic dinner at the restaurant Europea and a live show at the Casino Cabaret, the Place des Arts or La Maison Symphonique. Finally, take advantage of the world-famous nightlife: whether it's a jazz club, a comedy club or a dance club, no one does it better than Montreal! |
CULTURA LOCALCar ParkingThere are several rules when it comes to parking your car in Montreal. When in doubt, ask our concierge. Currency and TaxesThe unit of currency is the Canadian dollar. There are many currency exchange centers throughout the downtown area. They either charge a fee or take a couple of percentage points off the exchange rate for their services. Most goods and services in Quebec are subject to two taxes, a federal tax of 5% (TPS on receipts) and a provincial tax of 9.975% (TVQ on receipts). A tax of 3.5% per night of hotel stay is also charged. GRATUITIESA tip of 15% is customarily left for waiters and waitresses at the table, calculated on the pre-tax total of your bill. You are free to leave more or less than a 15% tip if circumstances warrant. Weather adviceMontreal's climate varies a lot over the year. The city is known for its cold winters, but its summers are hot and generally sunny, with occasional muggy days. Average temperatures vary from 10 to 25°F (-13° to 5°C) in January to 65-80°F (18°-27°C) in July. |
¿SABÍA QUÉ? ?FestivalsMontral is a city of festivals, a tradition that peaks in the summer but continues year-round. More than 50 exist, such as the Montreal international Jazz festival, Just For Laughs Comedy festival, Nuits d'Afrique festival, Francofolie festival, Montreal International Fireworks festival and many more. LanguageQuebec, the Province in which Montreal is located, is the largest French-speaking territory in North America. English, however, is widely spoken in Montreal. Parc Jean-DrapeauOriginally built from the leftover dirt from the construction of our metro system, Parc Jean Drapeau was the site of the 1967 World Exposition. Now, completely transformed, you will find the Formula 1 race-track, the Montréal Casino, La Ronde (amusement park) and a public beach. |
QUÉ METER EN LA MALETAAdapterElectricity in Canada is 110V and the plugs are the same as in the U.S. If you come from a country that uses 220V electricity, you will have to bring a converter for any device you bring along. CameraMontreal has many beautiful sights, so bring a camera and you'll have lots of beautiful memories to keep. Comfortable shoesThe best way to discover most of the city is on foot, so pack some walking shoes. ID tagsIf arriving by plane, make sure to have personal ID tags on your luggage, aside from your airline tags. |
