Then walk down to Ribeira, one of the oldest and more typical neighbourhoods by the river Douro. On the way, visit the Palacio da Bolsa, and its magnificent Arab room and the Casa do Infante where it is believed that Henry the Navigator was born in 1394. Walk alongside the river and cross the Luiz I bridge to the other side, to Gaia, where most of the famous Portwine brands still have their cellars. All of them welcome visitors for guided tours and wine tastings. Have lunch at one of the many restaurants and enjoy the magnificent view overlooking Porto. |

¿SABÍA QUÉ? ?Porto The City That Gave Portugal Its NameLocated along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European cities, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin for the name Portugal, based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese the name of the city is spelled with a definite article as o Porto in English the port. Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers. |
QUÉ METER EN LA MALETAFrom October OnwardsIf you come and visit us during Autumn or Winter be sure not to forget an umbrella when you pack and also, bring a warm sweater as Porto can be very windy and humid during winter season. |
