Old San Juan is steeped in Spanish colonial history and was built by the Spaniards during the early 1500's after its discovery in 1493. A morning visit to this Fortress City is a wonderful way to start the day, catapulting you back in time. Venerable churches, fortresses, classic colonial buildings and city squares are already being washed with the morning sunlight. Walking Old San Juan is the best option; the narrow streets and original Spanish architecture give you a glimpse of what life was like during the 1500s and 1600s. El Morro Castle sits at the highest point of our city and is a great place to start. Survey the city and then wander down.
Have a Puerto Rican 'fonda' style lunch at Cafe Puerto Rico, and from there take the Ferry Boat at the harborside of Old San Juan and cross the San Juan Harbor. From here take a taxi to the Bacardi City Tour where you will enjoy a complimentary tour of the Bacardi Rum Distillery, with 127 acres of sugar cane plantation, tropical gardens, an open air pavilion and an excellent museum. This is not just to tantalize you: along the way you can also sample Puerto Rico's finest rums.
In the evening when a glorious sunset gives the city an orange glow, Old San Juan acquires a heavily romantic atmosphere, and a feeling of possibility fills the air. A great area to go at this time is the SOFO (South of Fortaleza) District, known for the great variety of restaurants and live entertainment on offer. Sit, eat and see what the night has in store for you, the perfect way to celebrate a perfect day.
